Volvo has discontinued the S90 sedan in India, removing it from its official website. This move follows a recent minor update to the model earlier in 2024. The S90 was Volvo’s only sedan offering in India and competed in the premium executive sedan space alongside the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The withdrawal of the model was not accompanied by any formal announcement, suggesting a quiet phase-out rather than a high-profile exit. Shrinking demand for sedans, particularly in the luxury segment, may have been a key factor in this decision. The S90 was launched in India in 2016 and was noted for its minimalistic exterior and comfort-oriented cabin. The most recent update brought slight changes, including a redesigned bumper, a subtly revised grille, and minor interior tweaks.
Powertrain

The car was powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with mild-hybrid technology. It produced approximately 250 horsepower and 350 NM of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The setup emphasized comfort and efficiency rather than performance.
Facelifted Version

Despite the facelift, the model struggled to gain traction in a market increasingly favouring SUVs. In India, this shift has been particularly evident in the premium car segment, where larger SUVs tend to outsell sedans due to their versatility, road presence, and suitability for Indian road conditions.
Next Step

With the S90 discontinued, Volvo’s current India lineup is now entirely SUV-focused. The portfolio includes models such as the XC40, XC60, and XC90, as well as their electric versions. Volvo has been gradually transitioning toward electric mobility globally, and the removal of low-demand internal combustion models like the S90 aligns with this broader direction. Stricter emissions norms in India and globally may have also influenced the decision.
Existing S90 Owners

For existing owners of the S90, Volvo has confirmed that support services, warranties, and spare parts availability will continue. The discontinuation affects only new sales and does not impact current ownership.
It remains uncertain whether Volvo plans to re-enter the sedan segment in India in the future, possibly with an electric model. For now, the brand appears to be concentrating its efforts on its SUV and electric vehicle range in response to evolving consumer preferences and regulatory trends.
