1 min read

Vietnam’s electric vehicle maker VinFast has started road testing its VF6 electric SUV in India. This signals preparations for its official entry into the market. The VF6 was seen on public roads while covered for protection. It is expected to compete in the compact EV segment, which is seeing more activity from both established and new companies.

Overview

The VinFast VF6 is an electric crossover available in various trims worldwide with battery options estimated to provide a range of about 399 km (WLTP). The EV supports both AC and DC fast charging, allowing for faster recharges for daily travel or longer trips.

Design

The VF6 keeps the brand’s signature V-shaped front fascia, sharp LED lights, and aerodynamic shape. The rear will have a connected LED tail lamp design.

Powertrain

In global markets, the VF6 offers a front-mounted electric motor producing up to 201 BHP and 310 NM of torque. Performance figures may vary for the Indian version, depending on localisation plans and pricing strategy. The vehicle is also equipped with regenerative braking to improve energy efficiency.

Interior

The international-spec VF6 has a simple cabin design. It includes a central touchscreen, a digital driver display, and connected car features. It provides driver-assistance systems (ADAS), climate control, and several drive modes. The features for the India-spec version will vary based on the variants available at launch.

Market Positioning

VinFast is aiming for the rapidly growing EV market in India. Tata, MG & Mahindra are established players in the Indian electric vehicle market and are VinFast’s main competitors. The brand will need to develop consumer trust and a reliable after-sales network to gain traction. The success of the VF6 will depend on how well VinFast manages pricing, infrastructure support, and brand positioning in a quickly changing EV segment.
