Toyota has officially confirmed that the Land Cruiser FJ will make its India debut in 2028, marking the brand’s arrival to the compact off-road SUV space. The upcoming model draws inspiration from the classic FJ Cruiser, which gained cult status for its rugged design and strong performance. The new FJ will serve as the entry point into Toyota’s Land Cruiser family, sitting below the flagship LC 300. Toyota has already confirmed India as one of the launch markets, and in fact, India will also serve as one of the production bases for the model. It could be the first product to roll out from Toyota’s new Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra. The SUV will cater to buyers seeking a capable off-roader with modern hybrid technology and a smaller footprint than the full-sized Land Cruiser. This aligns with Toyota’s long-term strategy of introducing hybrid-based SUVs in India instead of diesel-powered models.

Design Inspired By The Past, Built For The Future
The design of the Land Cruiser FJ stays true to its heritage, while featuring modern elements. The model, showcased at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, features a boxy silhouette with LED headlights, an upright stance, and wide wheel arches that highlight its rugged intent. It gets a spare wheel mounted on the side-opening tailgate. The proportions are smaller than the Fortuner, making it suitable for urban use while retaining off-road credentials. The SUV’s exterior features short overhangs, high ground clearance (215 MM), and roof rails, all hinting at its adventure-ready personality. Inside, Toyota has provided plenty of physical buttons for various controls. The dashboard features a 12.5-inch touchscreen and a digital driver’s display. Notably, the display model did not have a sunroof and rear AC vents. The model features a two-row, five-seat layout and will likely offer a spacious cabin, balancing comfort and utility for buyers.

Hybrid Powertrains To Replace Diesel
The new Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota’s latest entry in the iconic SUV lineup, uses a body-on-frame construction on the rugged IMV platform, shared with the Fortuner, Innova Crysta, and Hilux. Toyota has confirmed that the Land Cruiser FJ will not feature a diesel engine, marking a major shift from the brand’s traditional powertrain choices. Instead, it will rely on petrol, strong-hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems, both developed on Toyota’s modular TNGA platform. The standard petrol version will likely use a 2.7-litre petrol engine that produces 163HP and 246NM of torque. Strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid options will also be available, which will produce even higher numbers. It will most likely come with a 4WD system and a 6-speed automatic gearbox, as seen at the Japan Mobility Show. This move reflects Toyota’s transition toward sustainable mobility while maintaining its reputation for durability and off-road ability.

Expected Price & Market Positioning
When it launches in India, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ might sit below the Fortuner, making it the most affordable member of the Land Cruiser lineup. It is expected to be priced around ₹30-35 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the powertrain and features. This places it in a segment currently occupied by models such as the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, MG Gloster, and Toyota Fortuner, but its strong hybrid setup and off-road-oriented design will set it apart. The FJ is expected to feature advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), multiple drive modes, and a comprehensive off-road suite that includes terrain response control and hill-descent assist. It would appeal to enthusiasts seeking a tough, go-anywhere SUV that combines modern efficiency with old-school adventure spirit.
