Toyota Innova Marks 20 Years

1 min read

Launched in 2005, the Toyota Innova replaced the widely used Qualis, stepping into a segment with little competition and limited expectations. It was pitched as a more refined, family-focused alternative to the utilitarian MPVs of the time. Over time, the Innova became synonymous with long-distance comfort and reliability.

Shifting Priorities & Mixed Reactions

The original diesel-powered Innova was renowned for its durability, with many cars still in service after decades. With the Crysta, Toyota introduced more powerful engines and upgraded interiors, but the formula remained familiar. The HyCross, however, marked a shift. Built on a TNGA platform with front-wheel drive and hybrid-only powertrains, it traded the robustness of the older body-on-frame diesel Innovas for efficiency. It offered a claimed mileage of over 23 KM/L, which sounds impressive, but this came at the cost of rear-wheel drive and the popular 2.4L and 2.8L diesels. This was seen as a compromise by many who still prefer the older Crysta still sold alongside the HyCross.

20 Years In

While celebrating two decades in India, the Innova now stands at a point of transition. It began as a rugged multi-purpose vehicle with minimal frills and now resembles a hybrid family crossover. We still aren’t sure if cabbies are convinced by the shift, since they’re still opting for the older Crysta instead of the new HyCross. In fact, the Toyota Innova commands the best resale value amongst any other car in the used market! The shift to petrol-hybrid makes sense on paper, but it distances the vehicle from what made it successful in the first place, and what its core consumer base wants. The body-on-frame platform could take abuse that the new one simply can’t.

Conclusion

The Innova’s legacy is complex. It’s not just a story of a good product, but also of how little competition there has been. The Hycross is yet to find its place, and competitors like the Kia Carens, offering electric and diesel powertrains at a lower price point, and the Maruti Ertiga, are hot on its heels.
