The Toyota Innova Hycross has completed three years in India, marking the occasion with a significant sales milestone of 1.6 lakh units since its launch in November 2022. Toyota introduced the Hycross as a petrol and strong hybrid alternative to the long-established diesel powered Innova Crysta. Over time, the Hycross has become the preferred choice for many MPV buyers due to its efficiency, features and smoother driving experience. It has also helped Toyota strengthen its presence in the utility vehicle market, where the company continues to post strong growth. The Hycross now accounts for a majority share of Innova sales, about 59–61% in FY2025 and around 63% in the April–September 2025 period, which shows how buyers have gradually shifted from the diesel focused Crysta to this newer hybrid choice.

Demand Shift From Crysta To Hycross Over Three Years

The Hycross has seen steady growth since its launch, and the shift in demand is clear. In its first five months on sale in FY2023, it contributed 20% of total Innova sales. In FY2024, it overtook the Crysta, selling 52,997 units, compared to the Crysta’s 45,183 units. The gap widened in FY2025, with the Hycross contributing 59% of Innova sales at 62,794 units, while the Crysta recorded 44,410 units.

In the ongoing FY2026, the trend continues. Between April and September 2025, Toyota sold 53,589 Innova units, out of which 63% (33,553) were Hycross models. This shift shows strong acceptance of Toyota’s hybrid technology in a segment that was once dominated by diesel engines. The model crossed its first one lakh units in 24 months, then added another fifty thousand units in the next nine months, taking the total to 1,60,695 units by the end of September 2025.

Features, Safety & Hybrid Tech Drive Popularity

Much of the Hycross’ success comes from its blend of space, comfort and hybrid efficiency. It uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with Toyota’s fifth generation strong hybrid system, producing 184 HP. Buyers can also opt for a 173 HP 2.0-litre petrol engine with a CVT. Toyota claims the hybrid system can run the MPV in electric mode for around 60% of typical city driving, which helps improve fuel consumption in real world use. The Strong Hybrid variant of the Hycross is rated at 23.24 KMPL as per ARAI.

Safety has also played a major role in its rising popularity. The Hycross received a 5-star rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests. All variants of the Hycross come with six airbags, while Toyota Safety Sense (ADAS) adds features such as pre-collision braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and auto high beam. These additions have helped the Hycross position itself as one of the safest and most feature rich MPVs in the country.

A Strong Position In Toyota’s Lineup

The Innova Hycross now forms the backbone of Toyota’s MPV sales, supported by continued demand from families, fleet buyers and long distance users. Even with a higher price tag than the Crysta, it maintains strong appeal because of its fuel efficiency and comfort oriented package. The Hycross range starts at around ₹18.90 lakh and goes up to ₹30.83 lakh, while the Crysta sits between ₹18.66 lakh and ₹25.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Despite this overlap, the hybrid powered model has clearly become the more popular option.

The Hycross’ three year journey shows how quickly buyer preferences can evolve when efficiency, practicality and safety come together. With over 1.6 lakh units sold, the MPV has established itself as a core part of Toyota’s lineup and continues to lead the brand’s utility vehicle sales in the country.
