Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder continues to make its mark in the Indian SUV market. In August 2025, the midsize SUV recorded sales of 9,100 units, up 3.24% MoM, achieving its all-time high monthly sales. This figure places it among the stronger performers in its segment, where competition remains fierce with models from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia, and Honda. The consistent monthly volumes and over 160,000 sales suggest that Toyota has managed to secure a customer base while also attracting new buyers looking for hybrid and petrol alternatives in the SUV space.

Major Milestone Since Debut

Since its launch in September 2022, the Hyryder has crossed the 160,000-unit sales milestone in India. Achieving this mark in under three years highlights the growing acceptance of hybrid technology in the Indian market. In the first five months of FY 2026, it has sold 37,591 units, the most by any Toyota badge-engineered models. Toyota’s strategy of offering multiple powertrain choices, including strong-hybrid, mild-hybrid, and CNG, has helped the Hyryder appeal to a wide range of customers. This cumulative achievement also shows how the model has contributed to Toyota’s overall growth in India, becoming a key product alongside its more established models like the Innova and Fortuner.

Hybrid Advantage

One of the Hyryder’s standout features is the availability of a strong-hybrid powertrain, which offers a claimed efficiency of 27.97 KMPL, much better compared to conventional petrol engines. The Hyryder, along with the Grand Vitara, are the only ones in their segment to provide a hybrid option, further solidifying its position. The hybrid system allows the Hyryder to bridge the gap between petrol and EVs. This also enables it to compete directly with established rivals such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. While these competitors rely primarily on petrol and diesel options, the Hyryder’s hybrid edge gives it a unique selling point in the segment.

Growing Competition

Despite its success, the Hyryder faces increasing competition as other manufacturers prepare to bring hybrid or electric models into the midsize SUV category. However, Toyota’s early entry with the Hyryder has given it a strong head start. In FY2025, the Hyryder managed 60,388 units, showing a 23% YoY growth. It was even the first SUV to offer a CNG option in India. Post GST 2.0 revision, the Hyryder’s pricing has reduced by up to ₹42,000, making it more accessible.

The company’s focus on combining efficiency with practicality has helped the SUV maintain consistent demand. Going forward, Toyota may expand features, add new variants, or refresh styling to keep the Hyryder competitive. With rising consumer interest in greener technologies, the model is expected to play a significant role in shaping Toyota’s long-term sales performance in India.
