Japanese automaker Toyota is preparing to introduce the mild hybrid version of the Fortuner in India. Over the decade, the Toyota Fortuner has become one of the most popular SUVs in its segment. It gained a lot of popularity due to its rugged build quality, reliability, and off-road capabilities. Now, Toyota is preparing to introduce a mild hybrid version of the Fortuner next month. The mild hybrid version is expected to get even better fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions. Production of the mild hybrid version has already begun, and it is set to hit the market next month.
Powertrain
Most likely, the upcoming hybrid Fortuner will get a 48-V hybrid system. This will be paired with its 2.8-litre four-cylinder GD series diesel engines. This will ultimately lead to improved fuel efficiency, power output and reduced emissions. The alternator will now be replaced with a 48-volt belt-integrated motor starter unit. This overall new setup will bring a 10% improvement in efficiency compared to the existing diesel Fortuner. Additionally, the new powertrain will also provide a better driving experience with a little power boost, smoother engine start and regenerative braking. Toyota promises that this powertrain will not compromise on off-road capabilities or driving dynamics, and continue to offer 700 mm of water wading capacity.
Impact On The Indian Market
The hybrid Fortuner will bring a lot of potential for Toyota in the Indian market, especially with the increasing demand for eco-friendly vehicles. Since fuel prices are getting higher day by day in India, the hybrid Fortuner will attract fuel-conscious buyers by offering 10% improved fuel efficiency with its hybrid system. The hybrid Fortuner is expected to get an ADAS system too, which will further enhance its appeal to consumers. The ADAS system will help improve safety features in the vehicle.
Launch
Toyota introduced its first-ever hybrid Fortuner in early 2021. Later on, it disappeared for unknown reasons.
