Toyota’s plans for India’s hybrid market appear to be expanding. A camouflaged unit of the Toyota Aqua has been spotted testing on Delhi roads. The Aqua, currently sold in Japan, has never been available in India. Its recent sighting suggests that Toyota may be evaluating the model’s feasibility for a local launch.
Compact Hatchback Profile

The test mule captured on Indian roads retains the Aqua’s recognisable tall-boy stance. It features a short bonnet, high roofline & a tapering rear typical of urban hatchbacks. Though the vehicle was wrapped in camouflage, elements like the overall body proportions, compact length, & five-door layout were consistent with the Japanese-spec model.
Hybrid Powertrain & Platform

The Toyota Aqua is underpinned by the TNGA-B platform, the same architecture used in models like the Yaris sold overseas. The powertrain is a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a hybrid electric system, outputting around 114 BHP combined. This setup is mated to an e-CVT transmission and made for fuel efficiency.
The model has been marketed as the world’s most fuel-efficient compact car in Japan, with a claimed mileage of up to 35.8 KM/L (WLTC cycle). It uses a bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery, which offers more energy density than traditional nickel-metal hydride units. If launched in India, it would likely come through the CKD route initially, considering localisation of the TNGA-B platform could take time.
Urban Target & Segment Competition
Toyota could target urban users looking for low running costs without moving to a full EV. The Indian hatchback segment has seen declining numbers in recent years, but hybrids remain an unexplored opportunity in this space.
At around 4 metres in length, the Aqua could rival the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20 & the Citroen C3 in terms of size. None of these models currently offers any form of electrification. If Toyota prices the Aqua competitively, it could find space between premium hatchbacks & compact sedans like the Honda City e:HEV.
Japan-Spec Features
In Japan, the Aqua comes with a 10.5-inch infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, Toyota Safety Sense package, & electronic parking brake. However, we don’t know which of these features, if any, will make it to an Indian-spec version.
Conclusion & Launch Timeline
Toyota could be evaluating a 2026 timeline for Aqua’s introduction in India. This would give it time to study market response to existing hybrids like the Hyryder & Invicto, both of which have seen reasonable traction.
If brought in via CKD, initial pricing could place it higher than other hatchbacks in the segment, but lower than current hybrid sedans. For now, Toyota has not officially confirmed the Aqua for India. The test sightings, however, suggest a serious evaluation is underway.
