When the Thar Roxx RWD was launched in August 2024, it caught the attention of off-road enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. Built to embody the rugged charm of its predecessor, the Thar, this new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version raises an important question for potential buyers: Is a 4×4 drivetrain necessary for an SUV that promises to deliver both power and style? In this article, we dive into the key features of the Thar Roxx RWD, comparing it to the classic 4×4, and explore whether you need that extra traction for your off-road adventures—or if the RWD version can meet your needs without compromise.

The 4×4 System and Variant

The Mahindra Thar ROXX 4×4 comes with a powerful 2.2L mHawk diesel engine, offering both 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options. It also features the advanced 4XPLOR system, which allows you to select different terrain modes—Snow, Sand, and Mud—ensuring optimal performance on any surface. Additionally, the electronic locking differentials provide extra traction, enhancing the Thar ROXX’s off-road capabilities.

These features allow you to have an exceptional off-road vehicle that’s purpose-built for almost any terrain. The 4×4 starts from the MX5 variant and goes up to the top-of-the-line AX7L variant. The system comes only paired with the M-Hawk Diesel engine with either the manual or the automatic transmission. Although the consumers ask for the 4×4 to start from the base model, and also be made available with the petrol versions, Mahindra hasn’t made that happen yet.

Thar Roxx RWD Models

The RWD Thar Roxx is standard from the base model itself and is available up to the top of the line AX7L variant with both petrol and diesel versions, pairing both manual and automatic transmission. Of course! The base model MX1 itself gets a ladder-frame chassis along with the same suspension setup, along with a Brake locking differential and electronic stability control. Along with that, the customer gets 6 airbags as standard with a 5-star safety-rated SUV chassis. Is there even a compromise with the loss of 4×4?

What does the RWD variant compromise?

The 4X4 variants have one key feature that caught the eyes and attention of every Indian consumer, and that’s the mocha brown interior theme. Available only with the 4×4 variants starting from the MX5, the mocha brown interior option is still the most sought-after Thar Roxx spec every consumer demands, as the ivory interior gets dirty way too easily.

Obviously, with the loss of the 4×4 system, you cannot get this interior theme in the RWD models. Hence, making the 4×4 variant more desirable. Along with this, you lose front manual locking differential, crawl control and the intelli-turn features (in AX7L).

Verdict

The Thar Roxx AX7L RWD diesel variant is 2.10 Lakh Rupees cheaper than the AX7L AT 4×4(Ex-showroom). That means you save up to 2.40 Lakh Rupees on-road by not opting for 4×4, and you lose almost nothing but an interior option and gimmicky features.
Additionally, if you’re worried about the Thar Roxx RWD getting stuck in tough conditions should know that the RWD model is still an extremely capable ladder-frame chassis SUV that can handle tough conditions with ease. If one’s requirements are extreme off-road driving, they can consider the 4×4 variants. Otherwise, for just city driving and mild off-roading, the RWD variant is still plenty competent!
