Tesla’s entry into the Indian market has reached its first milestone with the Model Y gathering around 600 bookings since its launch. After a long wait, Tesla finally launched its operations in India in July. They entered the Indian market with their Model Y, a crossover, with price starting from ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) owing to a string of taxes. Its deliveries are scheduled to commence in September, initially limited to Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram and Pune, making it the company’s first EV rollout in the country.

Moderate Response To A Global Bestseller
The Model Y is one of Tesla’s most popular vehicles worldwide, often topping EV sales charts in key markets. In India, however, initial demand has been relatively low with just 600 orders. This falls quite short of Tesla’s plan of selling out its annual quota of 2,500 units in India. For context, Tesla delivers roughly 600 units in global markets every four hours. Its high import duties, limited charging infrastructure and premium pricing are likely factors that have impacted its sales. Still, the company views India as a long-term growth opportunity and is expected to monitor consumer response as deliveries begin.

Pricing & Variants Offered In India
The Model Y is being offered in India with RWD and RWD Long Range configuration, while the Performance version was introduced globally just a few days ago. The Performance version produces 460 BHP, accelerates from 0 to 100 KMPH in about 3.7 seconds, and has a claimed range of over 530 KM. The Long Range variant focuses on efficiency with an estimated 622 KM range on a full charge. The two variants, RWD and RWD Long Range, are priced at ₹59.89 Lakh and ₹67.89 Lakh (ex-showroom). This does not include the additional ₹6 Lakh for the autopilot option. The cost is significantly higher than comparable global markets due to import duties, making it accessible only to a niche buyer base for now.

Deliveries & Market Response
Deliveries of the Model Y are set to begin this September, starting with Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram and Pune. Tesla has also been in discussions with state governments to explore opportunities for charging infrastructure expansion. The Model Y’s performance and range figures may appeal to a few, although its pricing is hard to justify. How Tesla positions itself beyond this initial rollout could shape its long-term presence in the country.
