Tesla has quietly updated the Model Y Long Range variant in India, improving its driving range by 39 KM without any change in price. The EV now offers a certified range of 661 KM on a single charge, up from the earlier 622 KM, as per the WLTP testing cycle. Despite the enhancement, the price of the Model Y Long Range remains unchanged at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes the update a noteworthy value addition for prospective buyers. The Model Y is one of Tesla’s most popular electric SUVs globally, known for balancing performance, practicality, and range. With this update, the India-spec version becomes even more competitive in the premium EV space, going up against models such as the BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQB, and Volvo XC40 Recharge.

Battery & Efficiency Tweaks Behind The Improvement
Tesla has achieved this increased range due to a larger battery pack. The Model Y Long Range, which earlier came with a 78.1 kWh battery pack, has received a 5.2 kWh increase. As a result, it now gets a bigger 84.2 kWh battery pack. This change applies only to the Long Range variant, while the Standard variant remains unchanged. It features a rear-axle mounted electric motor that helps it accelerate from 0 to 100 KMPH in 5.6 seconds. The efficiency improvements could also be the result of enhanced battery management software that better regulates power output and regenerative braking. Tesla has been known to push such optimizations through over-the-air (OTA) updates, which means existing Model Y owners could see marginal gains in efficiency over time as well.

No Price Hike Despite The Update
In a rare move for the automotive industry, Tesla has introduced the range enhancement without increasing the model’s price. The ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag remains the same for the Long Range variant, even though the improvements make the car more capable. The Standard variant, which does not get any changes, retails for ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). This approach aligns with Tesla’s global pricing strategy, where performance or range enhancements are part of incremental upgrades rather than introducing them as new models. The decision not to alter the price also strengthens the Model Y’s position in the Indian electric SUV segment, where price sensitivity remains high. This makes Tesla’s offering more attractive for buyers seeking longer driving range and strong performance.

Strengthening Tesla’s Footprint In India
The update comes as Tesla continues to expand its operations in India. It has entered the Indian market with the solitary Model Y. The improved Model Y aligns with Tesla’s broader strategy to make its lineup more efficient and better suited for diverse global markets. For India, the update reinforces Tesla’s image as a technology-driven automaker that continually enhances its products through innovation rather than periodic redesigns. As charging networks grow and government incentives for EVs continue, the Model Y’s improved range could play a key role in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the country.
