Tata Motors has recorded more than 70,000 confirmed bookings for the new Sierra within the first 24 hours of opening orders on December 16. This places the Sierra among the strongest recent launches in the midsize SUV segment. Alongside confirmed bookings, Tata has also revealed that around 1.35 lakh potential buyers have already submitted their preferred configurations and are in the process of completing formalities. Bookings are open for a token amount of ₹25,000. Introductory prices for the Sierra range from ₹11.49 lakh to ₹21.29 lakh, ex-showroom, depending on the variant and powertrain. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from January 15, 2026, with Tata expected to scale up production to manage the initial surge in demand.

Diesel Variants Lead Buyer Preference

Dealer-level data indicates that over 50 percent of the bookings so far are for diesel-powered variants. This trend stands out, given the steady reduction of diesel options across many segments. The Sierra is one of only a few midsize SUVs still offering a diesel engine, alongside models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Tata’s own Curvv. The strong diesel demand suggests that buyers in this segment continue to value higher torque and fuel efficiency. Automatic diesel variants, in particular, appear to be drawing interest, reflecting broader market patterns where convenience and drivability influence purchase decisions.

Wide Powertrain Choice & Competitive Positioning

The Tata Sierra offers three engine options to cater to different buyer profiles. These include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 106 HP, a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 118 HP, and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit delivering 160 HP. Transmission choices vary by engine, with the petrol NA getting manual and dual-clutch options, the diesel paired with manual and automatic gearboxes, and the turbo-petrol offered only with an automatic. The Sierra is available in seven trims, ranging from Smart+ to Accomplished+, which allows Tata to cover a wide price and feature spread. With rivals such as the Creta, Seltos, Taigun, Kushaq, Elevate, and Hyryder in the same space, the Sierra’s opening-day response highlights strong initial interest.
