Tata Motors is preparing a staggered rollout strategy for the Sierra, starting with the electric versions in 2026. The Sierra EV will arrive with two drivetrains, a rear wheel drive layout for mainstream buyers and an all wheel drive setup for those who want stronger performance and mild off road capability. The dual motor AWD variant will sit at the top of the EV lineup and is expected to offer higher outputs along with a longer range figure. Reports suggest that the Sierra EV aims for a real-world range of around 450-500 KM on the bigger battery configuration. Tata plans to use this EV launch window to build interest in the brand’s new design direction and its acti.ev+ platform before launching the AWD variant of the ICE Sierra in 2027.

The AWD version of the Sierra EV is planned for 2026. Tata Motors hasn’t disclosed the Sierra EV’s specs yet, but it will likely use the Curvv.ev‘s 55 kWh battery and the Harrier.ev‘s 65 kWh pack. The 55 kWh battery on the Curvv.ev produces 167 HP and has a claimed range of 502 KM with a front-axle mounted motor. Meanwhile, the Harrier.ev pairs its 65 kWh unit to a 238 HP motor positioned on the rear axle, delivering a claimed range of 538 KM. The AWD Sierra EV will use two motors, one on each axle, to deliver stronger performance and handling. The RWD model, meanwhile, will serve as the entry variant. Both EV versions will support fast charging, multi level regenerative braking and updated battery management software. The company is also working on tuning the suspension for the added weight of the AWD layout while keeping ride comfort suitable for daily use.

ICE Variant To Gain AWD In 2027

While the Sierra EV will introduce AWD first, the ICE powered Sierra AWD will follow a year later in 2027. Tata plans this as the first AWD SUV in its ICE portfolio since the Hexa’s departure, which came with 4×4. The Sierra uses Tata’s ARGOS (Gen 2 Acti.ev for EV / ARGOS for ICE) underpinnings, which supports AWD, CNG as well as hybrid. The FWD Sierra gets three engine choices: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (160 HP, 255 NM), a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (106 HP, 145 NM) and a 1.5-litre diesel (118 HP, 260 NM (MT) / 280 NM (AT)). Tata has not yet revealed which engine and gearbox combination it will offer with the AWD. Tata may also offer a 7-seater version in the future, thanks to the flexible ARGOS platform. This staggered strategy helps Tata boost market demand as the SUV segment becomes more competitive.

Conclusion

The Sierra lineup is shaping up to become one of Tata’s broadest SUV families, with both EV and ICE choices aimed at different buyer groups. The EV range arriving in 2026 will target early adopters, tech focused users and buyers who want a modern SUV with strong driving range. The ICE AWD model planned for 2027 will attract customers seeking capability without switching powertrains. This phased rollout keeps the Sierra relevant over multiple years and lets Tata respond to shifting market trends.
