Tata Motors recorded a remarkable 96 percent year-on-year rise in its electric vehicle sales, reaching 9,191 units in September 2025. This is almost double of the 4,680 units sold during the same month last year. This sharp jump highlights the growing acceptance of EVs among Indian buyers and reinforces Tata’s position as a dominant player in the country’s electric mobility space. This surge in sales was crucial, as Tata was lagging behind JSW MG Motor India for quite some time now. The growth also comes due to increasing demand for affordable transport solutions and government-led initiatives that have encouraged EV adoption.

Contribution To Overall Sales

The company’s EV performance played a significant role in its broader passenger vehicle segment. Tata Motors sold 60,907 passenger vehicles in September 2025, meaning EVs accounted for 15 percent of total volumes. This milestone coincides with the company’s quarterly EV sales reaching nearly 25,000 units in Q2 FY26. As a result, a 59% year-on-year growth was evident, accounting for a record 17% of total passenger vehicle sales. Tata has been consistently breaching numbers over the past three months. After surpassing the 7,000 monthly EV sales mark for the first time in July, it went on to cross 8,000 in August and 9,000 in September. This trend highlights the increasing share of electric cars in the company’s portfolio, which has been ever growing in the recent years. As battery technology improves and the charging network expands, the EV segment has begun to act as a meaningful growth driver rather than a niche category.

Model-Wise Impact & Market Factors

The surge in numbers was powered by strong demand for Tata’s electric models like the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, Punch EV, and the recently launched Harrier EV. Among these, the Nexon EV (recently updated with ADAS) and Tiago EV continued to be the most popular choices, appealing to those looking for affordable running costs. The newly launched Harrier EV seems to have added a boost to the company’s EV appeal. Tata continues to see demand for the Punch and Nexon EVs along with the Curvv EV. Despite the MG Windsor selling nearly 7000 units alone this month, this surge in EV sales might help Tata reclaim its market share. External factors such as high fuel prices and supportive GST structures also made EVs more attractive to customers, creating favorable market conditions.

Sales Momentum Signals Record EV Year Ahead

With September’s results, Tata Motors is on track to achieve record annual EV sales in 2025. The total EV sales in CY2025 (January to September) stand at 57,022 units. This is equal to 83% of its CY2024 total. Numbers suggest that the company could cross the 75000-80000 mark this year if current demand continues into the final quarter. Its best-ever annual sales were at 69,153 units in CY2023. In CY2024 sales, it closed at 68,980 units, falling short of the CY2023 figure by 173 EVs. Despite more attention on ICE vehicles due to revised GST rates, Tata’s EV momentum is set to break that record. The September surge signals that the EV market in India is evolving rapidly from early adoption to mainstream acceptance, with Tata and MG at the center of this transition.
