Tata Motors has expanded the powertrain choices for its flagship SUVs by finally introducing petrol versions of the Harrier and the Safari. Until now, both models relied only on diesel power, which limited their appeal in regions where petrol engines are preferred. These new petrol variants will be sold alongside the existing diesel versions, giving buyers more flexibility. While prices are yet to be announced, Tata has already revealed detailed specifications and variant line-ups, signalling a full-scale rollout.

1.5-Litre Hyperion Turbo-Petrol: Output & Performance

Powering both SUVs is the 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, developed in-house and first seen on the Sierra. In the Harrier and Safari, Tata has retuned the motor to produce 170 HP and 280 NM. This is 10 HP and 25 NM higher than the Sierra’s 160 HP and 255 NM output. Torque delivery starts early, with 160 NM available from just 1,000 RPM, helping these SUVs move easily in city traffic. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox. Tata also claims that the petrol versions are around 80 KG lighter than their diesel counterparts, which should marginally improve responsiveness.

Variants & New Petrol-Exclusive ‘Ultra’ Trims

Tata has reshaped the variant structure to accommodate the petrol engine. The Harrier petrol is offered in seven trims, ranging from Smart to the new Fearless Ultra top-spec version. The Safari petrol mirrors this approach with trims that culminate in the Accomplished Ultra. These Ultra variants are exclusive to the petrol models and add several features not available on the diesel SUVs.

Highlights include a large 14.5-inch Samsung-powered touchscreen, Dolby Atmos support paired with a JBL premium audio system, a digital inside rear-view mirror with an integrated dashcam, and new dual-tone interior themes. Both SUVs also continue to offer Dark and Red Dark editions, which focus on cosmetic enhancements..

Comfort & Efficiency Trade-Offs

On the road, the petrol Harrier and Safari focus on providing a mix of refinement and sportiness. The engine feels smoother and quieter than the diesel, with linear acceleration that suits relaxed driving and highway cruising. Ride quality remains strong, helped by the Land Rover-derived platform. However, firmness is noticeable at low speeds, especially with larger 19-inch wheels. Fuel efficiency is where the petrol versions are likely to face scrutiny. Early driving impressions suggest real-world consumption is significantly lower than diesel figures, which could matter for high-mileage users. As a result, these petrol SUVs may appeal more to buyers prioritising refinement and features over running costs.

Where The Petrol Harrier & Safari Fit In The Line-Up

With the introduction of the petrol engine, Tata has broadened the appeal of both SUVs beyond their diesel-centric identity. The petrol Harrier and Safari make sense for urban users, low usage buyers, and those who want a quieter driving experience. At the same time, concerns around fuel efficiency mean the diesel versions may continue to attract heavy-usage customers. Overall, the petrol variants add choice rather than replacing the diesel, making the Harrier and Safari versatile offerings in the competitive SUV segment.
