G.N.C.A.P. have given the ‘Safer Choice Award‘ to the Harrier and Safari twins, it is the highest merit a vehicle can recieve in crash tests, provided a certain set of requirements are met.
The Tata duo were crash tested by G.N.C.A.P. back in 2023, with both receiving a five star safety rating and since then they were again submitted for additional tests to comply with the Autonomous Emergency Braking (A.E.B.), Speed Assistance System (S.A.S.) and Blind Spot Detection System (B.S.D.S.) requirements.
GNCAP Safer Choice Award Prerequisites
The award was launched in 2018, protocols were updated in August 2024 and to qualify, a car model must meet all of the following requirements:
Five star crash test rating for adult as well as child occupants
Give S.A.S. and A.E.B. (both car to car and vulnerable road user)
Provide B.S.D.S. as a stand alone option
Meet G.N.C.A.P. and U.N. regulatory performance requirements
Crash Test Ratings
Both scored 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 in child occupant protection in the G.N.C.A.P. tests, giving them a full five-star rating. The body shells were also noted to be ‘stable’ under impact and capable of withstanding further loadings.
Unsurprisingly, the pair also recieved five stars in the Bharat N.C.A.P. crash tests.
Safety Features
Seven airbags, Electronic Stability Control (E.S.C.), Traction Control Sytem (T.C.S.), Hill Descent Control, Anti-Lock Braking System (A.B.S.), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (E.B.D.), Brake Assist, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera and ISOFIX child seat mounts are all part of standard kit. While the higher variants also get ADAS, 360 degree cameras, blind spot detection and front parking sensors as well.
