Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced that the e-Vitara, its first mass-market electric SUV, will make its debut in Japan in January 2026. This launch marks a major milestone for the company as it takes its first step into the global EV market. The e-Vitara, revealed earlier this year in India, is a compact e-SUV designed for urban buyers. It carries forward the familiar Vitara badge but with an all-electric powertrain. As demand for electric vehicles grows in Asia and Europe, Suzuki is aiming to strengthen its position by introducing an EV option.

Built In India For Global Markets
A key highlight of the launch is that the e-Vitara will be manufactured in India. The Suzuki Motor Hansalpur plant in Gujarat will handle its manufacturing and also supply cars for export. This makes the SUV not only significant for Japan but also for India’s role in Suzuki’s global supply chain. The company has made India a central hub for its EV development, and it views the e-Vitara as one of the first models to reflect this strategy. The company will launch the e-Vitara in Japan in early 2026, with the India launch expected shortly after the Japan launch.

Expected Features & Specifications
Though Suzuki has not released the full technical details yet, the e-Vitara unveiled in India features a 49KWH and 61 KWH battery pack. The former comes with a front-wheel-drive setup that produces 142 BHP and 189 NM. Meanwhile, the larger battery pack is available in both front wheel drive (172 BHP, 189 NM) and four wheel drive (181 BHP). Maruti claims that the e-Vitara will offer a driving range of up to 500 KM on a full charge.

Inside, it offers automatic climate control, wireless charging, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. It also includes six airbags, a 10.25-inch infotainment display, a 360-degree camera, and a dual-spoke steering wheel with a 10.1-inch instrument cluster. Safety is also expected to align with global standards, making it a well-rounded offering in the compact EV SUV space.

India Launch Prospects
The question of when the e-Vitara will arrive in India remains open. Given that it will manufacture in Gujarat and export to Japan, its India launch could follow shortly after its global debut. The growing interest in electric vehicles in India, combined with government incentives, makes the country a natural next step. However, pricing will play a crucial role as the Indian EV market is still heavily influenced by affordability. Maruti Suzuki aims to position the e Vitara competitively with an estimated price range of ₹17 lakh to ₹23 lakh. If positioned well, the e-Vitara could become one of the first mass-market EV SUVs available in India under Maruti Suzuki.

Conclusion
For Suzuki, the e-Vitara represents more than just a new model. It signals the beginning of its larger EV roadmap, which aims for four battery electric vehicles in India by 2030. The success of the e-Vitara in Japan and potentially in India will likely set the tone for how aggressively the company pushes forward with its electric strategy. With competition intensifying from both domestic and international brands, the e-Vitara’s performance in the market would be crucial for Suzuki’s long-term EV ambitions.
