Skoda & Volkswagen Might Launch Hybrids By 2028

1 min read

European automakers Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVIPL) are entering the hybrid vehicle market. They’re working on strong hybrid midsize SUVs and sedans to be launched in the market by 2028. Their hybrid models will be based on the India Main Platform (IMP), a cost‑optimised derivative of Volkswagen Group’s CMP architecture.

New IMP Platform To Be Localised

The IMP is engineered to support internal combustion, fully‑electric and strong‑hybrid powertrains, allowing the group to offer a diverse range of powertrains. The platform will be highly localized to maintain affordability and meet local regulatory requirements. The group plans to launch hybrid SUVs and sedans before debuting full‑electric vehicles. With stricter CAFE 3 norms on the horizon, hybrids present a viable compliance shortcut while the pure‑EV ecosystem matures.

Manufacturing will take place at the Chakan plant near Pune, which currently produces MQB‑A0‑IN models. SAVIPL is negotiating with local suppliers to source hybrid components domestically and reduce import dependency.

Market Positioning & Competition

The hybrids are expected to enter the mid‑size SUV and sedan segments. There is already significant competition present in the segment with more undoubtedly on the way, from Hyundai, Kia, Renault and Nissan. Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, Toyota’s Hyryder and Honda’s City e:HEV are already on sale. As we reported earlier, the Hyundai Creta will also bring a hybrid powertrain next year. The famous Renault Duster is also slated for a return with a hybrid setup, as is the Nissan equivalent (the Terrano).

Debut By 2028

Skoda‑VW aims for a hybrid debut by 2027–28, by which time the IMP platform will be localized to a great extent. Launch timing also depends on government policy clarity around hybrid taxation.
