Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) has achieved a significant milestone by crossing 5 lakh engines at its Chakan facility in Pune. The plant has been exclusively producing the 1.0 TSI, achieving 95% localisation for the India 2.0 products. Skoda has been producing engines since 2014 at this facility.

What Engines Are Made Here?

The company manufactures its 1.0L TSI engines, which power various models across the company’s lineup. This turbo-petrol engine is found in the Skoda Kylaq, Skoda Slavia, Skoda Kushaq, VW Virtus, and VW Taigun. Both of these engines feature advanced emission technology. The 1.5L turbo-petrol offered in the Kushaq, Slavia, Taigun & Virtus, along with the DSG transmission, however, are still fully imported.

VW’s India Journey

SAVWIPL was established in our country over 2 decades ago. The conglomerate currently manages the operation of 5 brands in India, namely Skoda, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, Audi, and Porsche. The company operates two manufacturing facilities in our country; one in Chakan, Pune, and the other in Shendra, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The company’s Pune plant exports vehicles to markets such as Latin America, Africa, Mexico, and the ASEAN region. SAVWIPL has significantly increased its exports, with around 25-30% of the group’s total production being exported to global markets.

India 2.0 Strategy

Models such as the Kushaq and Taigun have been in good demand for exports. The Kylaq has been doing very well domestically as well. The India 2.0 strategy has proven fruitful for the company, not only for domestic sales but for exports too. Safe to say, the 2.0 strategy has injected a breath of excitement for the company. This export push also aligns with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative and helps the company achieve better economies of scale for its Indian operations.
