Renault will launch the Duster strong hybrid in India on October 17, 2026. The new powertrain will become the third engine option for the midsize SUV, alongside its existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. Called E-Tech, the hybrid system combines a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 KWH battery.
Duster E-Tech Hybrid Powertrain
The Duster hybrid uses a 1,789cc four-cylinder petrol engine alongside two electric motors. One 20 HP motor works as a generator, while a 49 HP motor drives the wheels. The combined system produces 160 HP and 172 NM. Renault pairs the setup with a 1.4 KWH battery and a multi-mode automatic transmission.
How Renault’s Hybrid System Works

Renault’s E-Tech system differs from the Toyota hybrid setup used by the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder. Toyota uses an e-CVT and power-split arrangement, while Renault’s system uses fixed gear ratios that can switch between different operating modes. As a result, engine RPM can rise and fall more like a conventional automatic. Drivers may also notice gear engagements as the system changes between electric drive, engine drive and combined operation.
Duster Hybrid Efficiency & EV Mode
Like other strong hybrids, the Duster can recover energy through regenerative braking and operate with the petrol engine switched off during suitable driving conditions. Renault claims that the hybrid system can allow up to 80 percent of city driving to take place in EV mode. However, actual fuel economy will vary with traffic, speed, temperature and driving style.
Duster Hybrid To Rival Grand Vitara & Hyryder

The new hybrid powertrain will place the Duster directly against strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Hyryder. It also gives Renault an electrified alternative in the absence of a diesel engine in the current Duster range. The Duster will become the fourth midsize SUV in India to offer a strong-hybrid powertrain.
Prices In India
Renault has not announced the price of the Duster hybrid yet. The existing Duster range is currently priced from Rs 10.49 lakh to Rs 18.49 lakh ex-showroom. The hybrid variant is expected to sit above the existing petrol versions, although Renault has not confirmed its positioning or pricing.
Verdict

The Duster E-Tech adds a strong-hybrid option to Renault’s midsize SUV range with a 160 HP powertrain, two electric motors and a 1.4 KWH battery. Its transmission and hybrid architecture differ from Toyota’s established system. Renault’s claimed EV-mode capability could also improve efficiency in urban conditions. However, pricing, variant details and real-world fuel economy will determine how the new powertrain compares with established hybrid rivals.
