Renault has officially unveiled the all-new Duster for India, marking the return of a nameplate that once defined and started the mid-size SUV segment. Unveiled in Chennai as part of Renault Group’s global Game Plan, the new Duster signals a decisive shift in strategy, moving beyond legacy appeal and focusing on technology, electrification, safety, and long-term ownership confidence

At its core, the new Duster is built on the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP), developed specifically for Indian conditions. Nearly 90 percent of the vehicle has been engineered for India, with the platform validated for extreme climates, high-altitude operation, long-term endurance, and compliance with 5-star crash safety standards. Renault claims over one million kilometres of validation testing, underlining a focus on robustness and ride quality, areas where the original Duster built its reputation.

Design

The design stays true to the Duster’s rugged identity but introduces a sharper, more contemporary and tech heavy look. With sharper designs and all LED lights around the car, the Duster has redone itself. Notably, the India-spec version does not carry a Renault logo on the front, replacing it with bold “DUSTER” lettering, a unique market-specific decision. The SUV features a muscular stance, pronounced wheel arches, load-bearing roof rails, and a horizontal LED light bar at the rear.

With 212 MM ground clearance, approach and departure angles of 26.9° and 34.7°, and diamond-cut 18-inch alloy wheels, the new Duster positions itself as one of the more mechanically capable SUVs in the segment. A new Mountain Jade Green colour, inspired by Himalayan landscapes, debuts as a signature shade.

Interior

Inside, Renault has gone for a “fighter-jet” inspired, driver-focused cockpit. Tactile buttons for the win here, much better than the touch buttons in most cars these days. The elevated centre console houses an electronic shifter. Material quality sees a noticeable upgrade with leatherette upholstery, carbon-fibre-style accents, and distinctive yellow detailing across the cabin.

The headline feature is Renault’s OpenR Link infotainment system with Google built-in, marking its first mass-market deployment in India. The 10.1-inch touchscreen offers native Google Maps, Assistant, Play Store access, and Google AI integration, with a future upgrade planned to Gemini. A 10.25-inch digital driver display mirrors navigation and driving data, improving situational awareness.

Comfort features include six-way powered and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, an electric panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, and an Arkamys 6-speaker sound system.

Powertrains:

  • Turbo TCe 160: A 1.3-litre turbo GDI engine producing 163 PS & 280 NM, paired with a 6-speed DCT (wet clutch) or a 6-speed manual. This is positioned as the performance-oriented option.
  • Turbo TCe 100: A familiar 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, aimed at accessibility and cost efficiency, offered with a 6-speed manual. This is likely the same engine from the Kiger.
  • Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160: Making its India debut, this system combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine, two electric motors, and a 1.4 kWh battery, claimed to be double the capacity typically seen in the segment. Renault states that the Duster can operate in EV mode for up to 80 percent of city driving, positioning it as one of the most efficient hybrids in its class.

Driving Dynamics

Renault continues to emphasise best-in-class ride and handling, a traditional Duster strength. The SUV gets front and rear disc brakes, hill descent control, and a chassis tuned specifically for Indian roads.

Safety is comprehensive, with 35 standard safety features, 17 ADAS functions tuned for India, and compliance with 5-star crash norms. Importantly, ADAS features are customisable and can be individually enabled or disabled, with preferences stored via the user’s Google profile, avoiding the intrusive nature seen in some rivals.

Practicality & Ownership

Boot space stands at 518 litres under the parcel shelf, expanding to 700 litres till the roof, which Renault claims is 80 litres more than the current segment leader. Interior storage totals 32.6 litres.

Renault has also introduced Renault Forever, offering a standard 7-year / 1,50,000 km warranty, a strong move in a segment where long-term ownership confidence plays a key role. Additional digital initiatives include a Renault VR app and the YouClip modular accessory system.

Bookings

Bookings open immediately via an R-Pass priced at ₹21,000, offering priority delivery and special introductory pricing. Official prices will be announced in mid-March, with Turbo petrol deliveries starting mid-April. The Strong Hybrid variant will follow around Diwali 2026.

What The New Duster Means

This is make or brake for Renault, thats why the new Duster is not just a comeback, it’s a reset. By combining a proven ride-handling DNA with hybrid technology, Google-based infotainment, ADAS, and a long warranty, Renault is aiming to reclaim relevance in a fiercely competitive segment to which they are way behind their rivals, following the discontinuation of the older Duster. Whether it succeeds will ultimately depend on pricing, real-world efficiency, and dealership execution. On paper, this is the most serious Renault product India has seen in years. If Renault can aggressively undercut the established leaders in this segment, it could become a formidable challenger to the current status quo, and can then stand true to the the phrase “Better Late Than Never”.
