Next-Generation Tata Nexon In Development

1 min read

Tata Motors India Limited (TMIL) has been working on the next-generation Nexon, one of the company’s best selling models. It’s expected to come with an updated design, segment-first features, platform changes and carry forward the Nexon’s legacy of value-for-money pricing and safety.

The Nexon – Tata’s Bestseller

Tata launched the Nexon in 2017. It slowly became one of Tata’s bestselling models and has been credited with reviving Tata Motors’ sales. The car was the first in the segment to get a 5-star safety rating. Tata released two comprehensive facelifts for the first-generation Nexon in 2020 & 2023, adding new features and refining the design further. The next-generation Nexon is slated for release in 2027, marking a 10-year lifespan for the first-generation model.

Technical Upgrades

The Nexon is based on Tata’s X1 platform, which traces its roots back to the Indica of the 1990s. Tata has chosen to overhaul the platform and modify it extensively instead of making an all-new platform, with a substantial update offered in the 2023 Nexon facelift. It shares this platform with the Indica, Indigo Manza, Zest & the Tigor. It is most likely the last vehicle to utilise this legacy platform.

Internally, the vehicle has been codenamed “Garud”. One can also expect an update to the electric version, the popular Nexon EV, but it’s unclear if they’ll be updated at the same time. Expect major aesthetic changes, feature upgrades and enhancements. The Nexon EV will also likely be ported over to Tata’s new electric vehicle platform, the acti.ev platform currently underpinning the Curvv EV and the Punch EV.

Powertrain

Tata Motors might discontinue its 1.5L turbo-diesel engine due to declining sales and expensive changes required to meet BS7 emission norms. They are expected to continue with their current petrol & CNG mills, with some enhancements to the turbo-petrol. The car will be offered with both manual & automatic transmission options.
