Tata Motors is working on the next generation of its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs, and new reports suggest there’s more than just a facelift coming with codenamed Taurus (Harrier) and Leo (Safari). Tata is expected to offer all-wheel drive (AWD) technology on these new models, something many enthusiasts and off-road fans have been waiting for. Along with that, both SUVs will sit on a fresh platform that should help improve cabin space, comfort, and driving dynamics.
Moving Beyond Front-Wheel Drive

Until now, the Harrier and Safari have been available only in front-wheel-drive setups, despite looking quite rugged. The present Harrier and Safari are based on Tata’s Omega architecture, which is a derivative for Land Rover’s D8 platform. However, the D8 platform has a lot of limits, one of which is that it isn’t capable of having an all-wheel drive system in internal combustion engine (ICE) form. Tata is reportedly planning to introduce an AWD option, which could finally let the Harrier and Safari handle rougher terrains more confidently. This is what has prompted Tata Motors to develop a new platform. The new underpinnings will, in essence, be like Mahindra’s NFA platform, a flexible architecture that is capable of using Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and electric powertrain options, along with space for the drive to be sent to both axles.
Adding AWD could also make the SUVs more appealing to buyers who need extra grip during monsoons, mild off-roading, or just want the reassurance of power going to all four wheels.
A New Platform Means Better Cabin Space?

Beyond the drivetrain changes, Tata is working on a new platform that could help free up more room inside. The next-gen Harrier and Safari are expected to have slightly larger footprints, which means better rear legroom and boot space. While the current models already feel roomy, this upgrade might help Tata keep up with rivals like the XUV700 and Hyundai Alcazar that offer spacious three-row options.
The bigger platform may also improve ride comfort and allow Tata to add new features, safety tech, and possibly even mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid options in the future.
What Else To Expect?

Apart from AWD and the new platform is likely to increase the overall size of the SUVs by 100 MM to 200 MM. This also Hints that the upcoming Tata Harrier and Safari might have more cabin space to offer than the existing ones. Tata might also tweak the exterior styling to look sharper, while keeping the bold, high-riding stance. The New Tata harrier and safari powertrain details will be expected with 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, 2.0-litre diesel and all-electric version.
Looking Ahead
The next-gen Harrier and Safari are expected to debut in the upcoming years, though Tata hasn’t confirmed exact timelines yet. Bringing AWD would mark a big step for Tata, making these SUVs more versatile for Indian buyers who don’t just want a big city SUV but also something that can handle weekend trails or challenging road trips.
For now, the idea seems simple: build on what the Harrier and Safari already do well, while fixing gaps like the lack of AWD and slightly limited cabin flexibility. If everything goes to plan, Tata’s updated SUVs could end up being even stronger players in the competitive midsize and large SUV space.
