Recent spy shots have shown the upcoming BMW X5 undergoing testing. This facelifted model is expected to debut by the end of 2026, as a substantial evolution in design and technology for BMW’s first SUV. It will align with BMW’s new Neue Klasse design philosophy.
Design
One of the most notable changes in the upcoming X5 is its design. Although it won’t be based on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, it will adopt several design elements from the new architecture. The exterior of the new X5 is expected to include the signature Neue Klasse look, such as a larger kidney grille, new headlights, and a longer wheelbase.
Powertrain Options
The next-generation X5 will be offered with both internal combustion engine (ICE) options and an all-electric variant, the iX5. This model will continue using the CLAR platform, which supports both powertrains. Unlike the previous iX5 prototype, the new model will be fully electric, utilizing a battery-powered system rather than fuel cells. Expect the X5 to continue with the present inline-6 & V8 engine options, in both petrol and diesel (no V8 for the diesel).
The prototype seen in spy images suggests that the new X5 will be larger, with a longer and wider body compared to the current model. This will provide increased interior space, making it even more comfortable for passengers. The design also includes a unique split rear window and potentially a fourth window in the rear quarter panel, adding to the vehicle’s aesthetic.
Interiors
The interior will also see significant upgrades. Expect the new panoramic iDrive X system, featuring a customizable pillar-to-pillar display. It comes with a separate area for the passenger as well. As part of its technological overhaul, the updated X5 will likely incorporate features from BMW’s latest electric models, such as more advanced ADAS systems.
Production and Launch Timeline
Production of the 2026 BMW X5 is set to begin in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with deliveries expected to start towards the end of 2026. Despite using the same platform as the previous model, this new model will go head-to-head with increasingly more advanced and affordable Chinese competition, along with its existing European competitors. More details are expected as we near the launch date.
