Mahindra has launched the updated 3-door Thar OG in India at a starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom). The latest update brings the new ‘OG’ suffix along with changes to the platform, suspension, steering, powertrains, exterior styling, comfort and safety equipment. The range continues with three engine options, manual and automatic gearboxes, and both RWD and 4WD configurations.

Mahindra Thar OG Prices & Variants

The Thar OG is available in AXT, LXT and ZXT trims, with prices ranging from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh. The base AXT is available only with the 1.5-litre diesel, 6-speed manual and RWD. Meanwhile, LXT and ZXT trims offer the 1.5-litre diesel, 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, with manual and automatic gearbox options depending on the variant. The range-topping ZXT 2.2 diesel 4WD automatic costs Rs 18.99 lakh.

Updated Exterior Design

The Thar OG gets a redesigned front grille with ‘Thar’ branding, new LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs and LED fog lamps with a cornering function. Mahindra has also revised both bumpers, widened the track and added ‘OG’ branding to the tailgate. The top-spec ZXT gets new 19-inch alloy wheels and the upgraded lighting package, while the AXT uses steel wheels and halogen lamps. Two new exterior colours, Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue, have also been added.

Interior & Feature Updates

Inside, the Thar OG gets Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery and a second-row armrest with integrated cupholders. Mahindra also claims improved NVH levels compared with the previous model. From the LXT trim onwards, equipment includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a colour MID, electrically adjustable ORVMs, cruise control and a rear wiper with washer. The ZXT additionally gets a wireless charger.

Safety Equipment

Safety equipment varies considerably between trims. The AXT and LXT continue with dual airbags, front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, while the ZXT adds six airbags, all-round disc brakes, TPMS and a rear-view camera. The six-airbag system includes Mahindra’s HPTS setup for additional protection during side impacts. ESP 9.3 is standard from the AXT upwards and integrates rollover mitigation, traction control, hill-hold control and vehicle dynamics control. Front parking sensors are standard on the ZXT.

New Platform & Suspension

The Thar OG moves to Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform, which was first introduced with the Thar Roxx. Mahindra says the platform provides higher structural stiffness than the outgoing model. The 3-door SUV also gets a Pentalink rear suspension with a Watts Link, designed to better control lateral movement of the rear axle. The top-spec ZXT additionally gets Frequency Dependent Damping, or DAVINCI dampers, with Mahindra claiming a more comfortable ride than the previous model.

4WD & Steering Technology

The updated Thar gains an Electronic Locking Differential that can electronically lock the rear axle to direct power towards the wheel with greater available traction. Dedicated Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes are also available on 4WD versions of the LXT and ZXT trims. Another major change is the replacement of hydraulic power steering with electric power steering, which should reduce the effort required during low-speed manoeuvring and parking.

Petrol & Diesel Engine Options

The Thar OG continues with three engine choices. The entry-level 1.5-litre diesel produces 119 HP and 300 NM and is available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 2.2-litre diesel now produces 152 HP and 330 NM, gaining 18 HP and 30 NM over the outgoing engine. Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol develops 162 HP and 330 NM, with gains of 10 HP and up to 30 NM. Both larger engines can be paired with 6-speed manual or torque-converter automatic gearboxes.

Verdict

The Mahindra Thar OG brings a substantial set of mechanical and equipment changes to the familiar 3-door SUV. The new M_Glyde 4G platform, revised rear suspension, electric power steering, updated engines and Electronic Locking Differential represent the key mechanical changes, while the new lighting, touchscreen, wireless charger and additional safety equipment improve its everyday specification.

However, equipment continues to vary significantly between variants, with features such as six airbags, all-round disc brakes, TPMS and the new suspension technology restricted to the ZXT. The Thar OG therefore retains a broad range that covers both simpler entry-level configurations and more comprehensively equipped 4WD versions.
