New Mahindra Bolero Spied

1 min read

The Mahindra Bolero is getting a major generational update. Recent spy shots reveal a heavily camouflaged prototype that retains its boxy profile but appears significantly larger, taller, and more proportionate than the current model.

Design & Platform Shift Likely

The test mule showcases upright lines, a flat bonnet, and a high roofline consistent with the Bolero’s utilitarian roots. However, the increased width, improved stance, and new wheel arches suggest a modernised ladder-frame chassis underneath, possibly shared with the updated Scorpio Classic or Thar.

Front-end elements like the grille and lighting are still under wraps, but sharper surfacing and LED signatures are expected. The rear continues with a side-hinged tailgate and exposed spare wheel, retaining the functional cues familiar to existing Bolero owners. Despite visual modernisation, Mahindra seems intent on preserving the model’s rugged identity.

Interior & Features

While the current Bolero is known for its durability, it’s also one of the most dated vehicles on sale in terms of interiors and safety. With this new generation, Mahindra is expected to address long-standing complaints by introducing improved ergonomics, a more modern dashboard, and better safety features.

A touchscreen infotainment system, semi-digital instrument cluster, and dual airbags will likely become standard. Rear AC vents, power windows, and improved NVH levels could also come, pushing the Bolero closer to mainstream urban utility standards. The car however, needs to prove its safety, as the Scorpio Classic & the Bolero have the worst safety standards among modern cars, scoring zero-star safety ratings. Rural customers aren’t given the same priority in terms of safety that Mahindra offers to its urban customers.

Powertrain

Under the hood, Mahindra is expected to offer an updated version of its 1.5-litre mHawk diesel engine, for better efficiency and lower emissions to comply with BS6 Phase II norms. The new Bolero will likely not receive a petrol option. A 5-speed manual transmission will come as standard, with no information yet on an AMT or automatic variant. The possibility of a 4WD variant is also there.

A Balance Between Modernity & Simplicity

The Bolero has always sold on the strength of its simplicity, low maintenance, and bulletproof mechanicals. While Mahindra has to modernise the platform and bring it up to current safety and emissions standards, the challenge will be to avoid pushing it too far from what existing buyers value. and diluting the Bolero’s original character.
