New-Gen BMW M5: More Power, More Weight

1 min read

BMW’s latest M5 has taken a big leap, going plug-in hybrid while keeping its legendary V8. Under the hood, there’s a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 plus an electric motor and about an 18.6 KWH battery pack. Together, they pump out a massive 727 BHP and 1,000 NM of torque. That’s well up there with supercars, yet despite this epic output, it comes with a drawback: the new M5 weighs around 2,435 KG, roughly 500 KG heavier than the previous model.

On The Track

During track reviews, the car was described as a “heavyweight champ”. It still delivers great traction and body control, but that weight does show when pushing hard on the circuit. A test drive at Buddh International Circuit, the V8’s roar gone and the PHEV tech onboard, it is still quick off the line but lacks some of the lighter, more agile vibe of its predecessors. Experts also noted the power-to-weight ratio dropped from around 319 BHP/TONNE to 299 BHP/TONNE due to the added weight.
In short, it’s still ludicrously quick, doing 0 – 100 KM/H in about 3.5 Seconds, but now apparently it feels more like a muscle saloon than a razor-sharp tool.

Hybrid Tech

The PHEV setup isn’t just about speed. It gives you an electric‑only mode with a 69 KM WLTP claimed range and multiple drive modes, including hybrid and pure EV. BMW’s adaptive M suspension, integral active steering, and xDrive AWD system help manage that weight, keeping it planted and surprisingly composed in corners. Inside, it has a curved dual-screen setup, sporty yet luxurious seats, high-end audio, and carbon-fibre accents.

Still A True M5?

That’s the big question. The hybrid powertrain gives insane numbers, but some feel the V8’s raw soul is a bit muffled. Some reviewers say it doesn’t feel as pure or visceral as older M5s. But to others, it’s still a rocket with comfort and conscience, if they are okay with the added bulk. So yes, the new M5 is still fast, luxurious, and extremely advanced, but it’s no longer the wild, untamed beast it once was. It’s refined.

Priced at around ₹1.99 Cr (Ex-Showroom), the M5 arrives in India as a CBU, bringing one of BMW’s most advanced saloon tech to local roads. For enthusiasts who crave speed, luxury, and hybrid smarts, it’s a solid contender. Just don’t expect the raw thrill of past generations; this one’s about power with somewhat of a polish.
