New Annual FASTag Plans Launched At ₹3,000

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new annual FASTag pass priced at ₹3,000 aimed at reducing congestion and promoting seamless digital toll collection across the country’s national highways.

What Is FASTag

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system operated by the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program under NHAI. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping for cash payments. The system automatically deducts the toll amount from the linked prepaid wallet or bank account, significantly reducing wait times at toll booths.

Details

The newly launched plan offers a one-time payment option for frequent highway travelers. For ₹3,000, users can avail themselves of unlimited travel on selected stretches of national highways for one year. This pass is expected to benefit commercial vehicle operators, logistics companies, and individuals who frequently commute between fixed routes.

Coverage

The ₹3,000 annual FASTag pass will initially apply to specific highway sections, with plans to expand its coverage to more routes in the coming months. NHAI has clarified that the pass does not provide pan-India unlimited access but is route-specific, meaning users must select the corridor where the pass will be valid.

Current FASTag

According to NHAI data, FASTag penetration in India has reached over 97% of toll transactions, with more than 7 crore active tags issued as of mid-2025. The move to introduce annual plans aligns with the goal of achieving 100% digital toll collection and reducing dependency on cash transactions at toll plazas. On an average day, more than ₹150 crore worth of toll is collected digitally through FASTag-enabled lanes across the country.

Impact

This initiative aims to provide cost benefits and convenience to regular highway commuters. Instead of making multiple recharges throughout the year, users can opt for a single annual payment, ensuring uninterrupted travel on designated stretches. However, for occasional travellers, the existing pay-per-use FASTag system continues to remain a suitable option.
