In a market where electric vehicles still aren’t accepted by the masses, MG’s Windsor EV has achieved 20,000 sales in just six months since its September 2024 launch, making it the best-selling electric vehicle in the Indian market. The achievement positions the Windsor as a frontrunner in India’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.
The Windsor has maintained consistent monthly sales momentum. After debuting on September 11, 2024, the vehicle recorded 3,116 units sold in October, followed by 3,144 in November and a year-end surge to 3,785 in December. January 2025 continued this performance with 3,277 units, contributing to the milestone achievement by March 2025.
MG claims their “AeroGlide” design focuses on aerodynamics. The Windsor’s design is polarising, with some finding it futuristic while others appear not to like it. Inside, MG has focused on comfort. The “Aero Lounge” seats recline to 135 degrees and provide unmatched comfort. A 15.6-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, controlling everything from climate settings to vehicle dynamics. The car also comes with a panoramic sunroof.
The Windsor’s 38 kWh lithium-ion battery delivers a claimed range of 332 kilometers per charge, sufficient for urban commuting with occasional highway journeys. It includes DC fast charging capabilities that charge the battery from 0 to 80 percent in 55 minutes at 50 kW stations, while a full charge takes 6.5 hours with a 7.4 kW AC charger. The Windsor’s electric motor generates 134 BHP and 200 Nm of torque, power figures that match other internal combustion engine vehicles in the same price range.
The Windsor’s success has even surprised MG, with the EV now outselling the company’s internal combustion offerings in India, which is a rare achievement for any manufacturer in the market. It has muscled its way past established players like the Tata Nexon EV in monthly sales figures. MG’s flexible pricing approach, including a unique Battery-as-a-Service model that reduces upfront costs has contributed to their success.
The MG Windsor EV is priced between ₹14-16 lakh for outright purchase, depending on the variant. With the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, the upfront cost drops to ₹9.99-11.99 lakh, while battery rental costs ₹3.9/km.
