JSW MG Motor India is positioning the Hector Tomahawk PHEV as an alternative to diesel-powered executive SUVs. Parth Jindal, Director, JSW MG Motor India, has described the seven-seat plug-in hybrid as a “diesel killer”.
The company believes the Tomahawk PHEV can combine the lower running costs of electric driving with the long-distance flexibility of a petrol engine. MG claims more than 115km of electric-only range and a combined range of over 1,100km.
MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV Prices In India
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV starts at Rs 25.70 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Exclusive variant. The higher-spec Essence variant costs Rs 27.80 lakh. MG also offers a Battery-as-a-Service option, which reduces the upfront price but adds a battery rental charge of Rs 3.20 per km.
The PHEV costs around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh more than the top diesel automatic versions of some competing SUVs. MG aims to offset this premium through lower running costs and electric driving capability.
MG Targets Diesel SUV Buyers

JSW MG estimates that India’s executive SUV segment sells around 50,000 units each month. According to the company, diesel SUVs account for about 40,000 units, while EVs contribute around 10,000 units.
The company believes many buyers choose diesel because they drive long distances. JSW MG says customers in this segment typically cover around 18,000km to 20,000km annually. The Tomahawk PHEV aims to provide an alternative without the range concerns associated with a fully electric SUV.
MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV Running Costs
JSW MG estimates that driving the Hector Tomahawk PHEV for 1,000km could cost around Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000. In comparison, the company estimates Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 for a diesel SUV over the same distance. However, these figures depend heavily on charging frequency and driving patterns. Regular home charging allows owners to complete more daily trips using electric power. As a result, petrol consumption can fall significantly.
MG also claims around 22kpl when the SUV operates mainly as a hybrid. Its claimed 30-50kpl figure assumes regular charging and substantial use of electric power. These figures combine electric and petrol-powered kilometres, so they cannot directly match conventional diesel fuel economy figures.
Hector Tomahawk PHEV Offers Over 115km EV Range

The Hector Tomahawk PHEV uses a 20.5kWh battery with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and an electric motor. MG claims an electric-only range of more than 115km. The SUV can also travel more than 1,100km with a fully charged battery and a full fuel tank. Therefore, owners can use electric power for regular urban trips while retaining the engine for longer journeys.
This setup gives the Tomahawk PHEV a different approach compared with conventional petrol and diesel SUVs. It can operate as an EV for shorter trips while retaining petrol-powered operation when required.
MG Targets 5,000-6,000 Tomahawks A Month
JSW MG Motor India is targeting combined monthly sales of 5,000 to 6,000 units for the Tomahawk EV and PHEV. The company expects both powertrains to contribute roughly equally to this target. If achieved, this would give the Tomahawk range around a 10-12 percent share of the 50,000-unit executive SUV opportunity identified by the company. The PHEV will therefore play an important role in MG’s strategy for the segment.
MG Tomahawk Gets Higher Localisation
The Hector Tomahawk EV and PHEV use MG’s ADAPT architecture, which supports different powertrain configurations. JSW MG currently has around 45 percent localisation for the Tomahawk range. The company plans to increase localisation to approximately 70 percent by next year. JSW MG says the investment required for this expansion has already received board approval.
Higher localisation could help MG improve supply chain efficiency and reduce its dependence on imported components. It could also support the company’s broader strategy for electric and hybrid vehicles in India.
PHEV Could Help MG Promote EV Adoption

JSW MG also sees the Hector Tomahawk PHEV as a potential stepping stone towards fully electric vehicles. The company believes customers can become more familiar with electric driving by using EV mode for their daily journeys. At the same time, the petrol engine provides additional flexibility for longer trips. This approach could appeal to buyers who want to experience electric driving but remain concerned about charging infrastructure and highway range.
Conclusion
The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV takes a different approach to the Indian executive SUV market by combining plug-in hybrid technology with seven-seat practicality. Its claimed 115km-plus electric range can cover many daily journeys without using petrol, while the engine provides additional range for longer trips.
MG’s running-cost claims could make the PHEV an interesting alternative to diesel SUVs. However, the actual savings will depend on regular charging, driving conditions and the proportion of journeys completed using electric power.
