MG has introduced a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) scheme for the Cyberster and M9 electric vehicles. Both models are sold through MG’s premium Select outlets. The scheme lowers their upfront prices by nearly Rs 10 lakh.

However, customers must pay a battery rental fee of Rs 8 per km. The BaaS scheme does not bring any mechanical or feature changes to either EV.

The MG Cyberster gets a BaaS price of Rs 72.49 lakh. Its regular price stands at Rs 82.50 lakh. Therefore, the scheme reduces the upfront cost by Rs 10.01 lakh.

Meanwhile, the MG M9 costs Rs 69.99 lakh with BaaS. The standard version costs Rs 79.95 lakh. This gives buyers an upfront saving of Rs 9.96 lakh.

Cyberster Powertrain & Range

The MG Cyberster continues with its 77 KWH battery pack. It uses a dual-motor AWD setup that produces 510 HP and 725 NM. MG claims a driving range of 580 KM. The BaaS scheme does not change the Cyberster’s powertrain, battery capacity or claimed range.

M9 Powertrain & Range

The MG M9 continues with its larger 90 KWH battery pack. Its front-mounted electric motor produces 245 HP and 350 NM. The electric MPV has a claimed range of 548 KM. It continues with a front-wheel-drive layout.

Battery Rental Charges Explained

The BaaS scheme reduces the amount customers pay when purchasing either EV. However, the Rs 8 per km battery rental adds a running cost. For example, 10,000 KM of driving would result in Rs 80,000 in battery rental charges. At 15,000 KM, the charge would rise to Rs 1.20 lakh. Therefore, buyers should consider their expected annual mileage before choosing BaaS. The lower purchase price comes with an additional usage-based cost.

Prices In India

The MG Cyberster costs Rs 72.49 lakh with BaaS, while the regular version costs Rs 82.50 lakh. The MG M9 costs Rs 69.99 lakh with BaaS compared with Rs 79.95 lakh without the scheme. MG has not made any other changes to either model as part of the BaaS offering.

Verdict

The new BaaS scheme gives the MG Cyberster and M9 significantly lower upfront prices. The Cyberster saves Rs 10.01 lakh, while the M9 saves Rs 9.96 lakh at the time of purchase.

However, the Rs 8 per km battery rental adds a recurring ownership cost. As a result, buyers should compare the upfront saving with their expected driving distance before choosing between BaaS and the conventional purchase option.
