The luxury automotive market in India is witnessing growth, particularly with the Mercedes-Maybach brand. In 2024, Mercedes-Benz reported selling 500 ultra-luxury Maybachs in India. This figure represents approximately 2.4% of the 21,800 Maybach units sold globally, with India’s share of sales growing year-on-year.
Growing Demand In India
The surge in sales can be attributed to various factors, including the increasing affluence of younger consumers and a strong demand for high-end automobiles. The average price of a Maybach in India starts at around ₹3 crore. It is a symbol of prestige and luxury among the wealthy elite of the country. Mercedes-Benz has historical significance in India, where it has catered to royalty for over a century.
Mercedes’s Performance In The Luxury Market
Mercedes is trying to solidify its position in the Indian luxury car market, with projections indicating that India could soon rank among the top five markets for the ultra-luxury Maybach segment. The company has brought all global Maybach models to India, including the recent EQS 680 Maybach & SL 680 Maybach. Daniel Lescow, head of Mercedes-Maybach, said India was already in its top 10 markets and had the potential to be in the top five, but the speed of growth would depend on how the luxury market develops. “I’m convinced there’s so much more potential … so many opportunities here,” Lescow told Reuters.
Future Growth
In 2024, overall sales for Mercedes-Benz in India reached 19,565 units, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 12.39%. Around 25% of Mercedes-Benz sales in India come from vehicles priced above ₹1 crore. As more Indians attain significant wealth, the desire for luxury cars continues to rise. The brand’s global head emphasized that the Indian growth trajectory was remarkable, with Maybach sales increasing by 145% compared to previous years.
