Mercedes-Benz India has achieved a major milestone in India. The brand has breached the 200,000 production milestone at its Chakan facility in Pune. The 200,000th vehicle to roll out of the facility was an EQS electric SUV. This landmark moment was flagged off by Dr Jorg Burzer, board member of the Mercedes Benz Group AG, Santosh Iyer, MD & CEO, and Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Head of Operations, Mercedes Benz India.
Mercedes’s India Operations

Mercedes-Benz has a rather interesting story when it comes to production milestones in India. While the first 50,000 units took 19 years (1995-2014), the next 150,000 units took just 10 years, out of which 50,000 units were built in the last two years. This shows the changing customer preferences and increasing demand for luxury cars due to the evolving mindset of Indian customers. Mercedes-Benz has always been a brand that has pioneered in bringing global technology to our shores. The Indian wing was the first to produce a Maybach outside of its home market, Germany, in the year 2015. The company began local assembly of the EQS 580 electric sedan in the year 2022. The EQS SUV was next, making Mercedes the first carmaker in India to localise two electric vehicles. The company’s facility has been running on green energy since the year 2022.
Mercedes’s Current India Lineup

As of today, Mercedes produces 11 models in India and has the most expansive luxury ‘Made in India’ car portfolio. A total investment of 3200 crores was spent to further strengthen the brand’s long-term commitment to our market. There are around 100 touchpoints across 50 cities in India to cater to a wide customer base and increase accessibility to the brand.
Mercedes offers a variety of models across various body styles in India, ranging from sedans to cabriolets to limousines, and crossovers to full-blown SUVs. In total, Mercedes-Benz offers 16 models in the Indian market. Also, curiously, it is Mercedes-Benz that offers the most SUVs in the Indian market!
