Mercedes-Benz S 450e PHEV Launched At Rs 2.20 Crore

The S-Class has never been about reinvention, it has always been about staying ahead of the curve. With the updated W223 S-Class, Mercedes-Benz India has introduced something the flagship limousine has never offered here before: a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Launched at Rs 2.20 crore (ex-showroom), the new S 450e combines electrification with the traditional strengths of the S-Class. Mercedes-Benz claims more than 2,700 components have been newly developed, updated or refined, making this the most extensive update the current-generation S-Class has received. The headline figures are impressive: 435 HP, 680 NM, and a claimed electric range of around 115 KM. But does the technology justify the substantial price increase over the outgoing model? Let’s take a closer look.

Platform

The facelifted S-Class continues on the W223 architecture, specifically the V223 long-wheelbase version sold in India. Dimensions remain unchanged, with a length of 5,289 MM and a wheelbase of 3,216 MM. Despite Mercedes’ claim of over 2,700 revised components, this is not a new-generation car. The core architecture introduced in 2020 remains intact.

The biggest structural change is the integration of a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery for the plug-in hybrid system, alongside new software architecture in the form of MB.OS, updated lighting technology and revised chassis calibration. In essence, the foundations remain familiar, but the technology layered on top has evolved significantly.

Exterior

The styling updates are noticeable without altering the S-Class’ familiar identity. At the front, the biggest change is the introduction of new twin-star digital light headlamps featuring micro-LED technology. Mercedes claims a high-beam projection area around 40% larger than before, with illumination extending up to 600 metres.The grille has also grown by approximately 20% and now features illumination alongside redesigned chrome star elements.

At the rear, new tail-lamps incorporate three chrome-framed star motifs, visually linking the design with the updated front end. New wheel designs and expanded Manufaktur customisation options further broaden personalisation possibilities, while the AMG Line package adds sportier bumpers and trim. One area that remains unchanged is aerodynamics. The S-Class continues with the same 0.22 Cd drag coefficient introduced with the original W223. Considering the additional weight of the PHEV system, further aerodynamic optimisation could have helped maximise real-world efficiency.

Interior

The rear cabin remains the centrepiece of the S-Class experience, but the biggest upgrades this time come from software rather than hardware. The new MB.OS operating system serves as the digital backbone of the car, connecting infotainment, powertrain, chassis and driver-assistance functions into a unified ecosystem. This enables faster responses, over-the-air updates and improved integration between vehicle systems.

The latest MBUX Superscreen brings an updated interface, enhanced “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, Zero Layer functionality and Google Maps-based MBUX Surround Navigation. Rear-seat comfort remains exceptional. Executive rear seats continue to offer up to 43.5 degrees of recline, while heating, ventilation and massage functions remain available. Buyers can also opt for the four-seat configuration with individual rear chairs and folding tables. Importantly, the physical cabin layout remains largely unchanged. The major advancements lie in software capability rather than a complete interior redesign. Fortunately, the previous S-Class already set a high benchmark in this regard.

Engine & Performance

The S 450e represents the biggest technical change to the S-Class lineup in India.

The Euro 7-compliant M256 Evo petrol engine develops 326 HP and 540 NM on its own. It is paired with a 163 HP electric motor integrated into the transmission. Together, the system delivers 435 HP and 680 NM, comfortably exceeding the output of the conventional petrol S 450 4MATIC. The 22 kWh battery enables a claimed electric range of around 115 KM, potentially allowing many urban owners to complete daily commutes without using the petrol engine.

One noteworthy detail is the absence of all-wheel drive. Unlike the S 450 4MATIC, the S 450e remains rear-wheel drive only. Mercedes says this benefits refinement and packaging, though some buyers may miss the additional traction offered by AWD. The claimed fuel economy figure of 32.3 KM/L should also be viewed in context. Such numbers are achievable only when the battery is regularly charged and contributing to propulsion. Real-world efficiency on longer journeys will be significantly lower.

Ride & Chassis

Airmatic air suspension comes standard, as does rear-axle steering. The standard system provides 4.5 degrees of rear-wheel steering, while an optional 10-degree setup reduces the turning circle considerably, making the large sedan easier to manoeuvre in urban environments.

Mercedes’ Car-to-X technology also remains one of the more intelligent comfort features in the segment. By receiving road-condition data from other Mercedes vehicles, the suspension can prepare itself for upcoming bumps and imperfections before the car reaches them.

Safety

Safety remains a core strength of the S-Class. For the first time in India, the S-Class now features 15 airbags, up from nine in previous versions. This represents a meaningful improvement in occupant protection, particularly for rear passengers. The updated Pre-safe system includes advanced belt pretensioners designed to better position occupants before a collision.

ADAS features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring. However, the facelifted model has not yet received an updated independent crash-test rating.

Variants & Pricing

Mercedes-Benz is offering two versions at launch:

Compared with the outgoing S-Class, pricing has increased by roughly Rs 35 lakh.

The additional cost brings genuine upgrades including PHEV technology, MB.OS integration, DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps and an expanded safety package. Whether those additions justify the premium will ultimately depend on buyer priorities.

Rivals

The primary rival remains the BMW 740i M Sport.

The Mercedes commands a significant premium but offers something currently unavailable in the segment: a plug-in hybrid powertrain with meaningful electric range. That advantage may not last forever, but for now it remains a differentiator.

Verdict

The S 450e is the most technologically advanced S-Class Mercedes-Benz has launched in India. The plug-in hybrid system is not a gimmick, 435 HP, 680 NM and a genuine 115 KM electric range represent a meaningful engineering achievement in a limousine of this size. MB.OS brings substantial software improvements, the new lighting technology is genuinely advanced, and the addition of 15 airbags strengthens the safety package.

That said, this remains a facelift rather than a clean-sheet redesign. The underlying architecture dates back to 2020, while the interior improvements are largely digital rather than physical. The biggest hurdle is price. At Rs 2.20 crore, the S 450e sits around Rs 38 lakh above a comparable BMW 740i. Buyers who can fully exploit the plug-in hybrid system may find the premium easier to justify. Those who cannot charge regularly may struggle to see equivalent value.
