The Mercedes-AMG C63 is making a significant change with the return of the V8 in the next gneeration. It marks a return to the basics, ditching the currrent 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo-petrol hybrid setup powering the current car. Despite its immense power and instant acceleration, it hasn’t resonated with enthusiasts. The new C63 debuting in 2026 will bring back the older V8 powertrain.
A Return To The C63’s V8
This decision follows poor sales of the new hybrid model, and massive backlash and criticism from enthusiasts and reviewers alike. While being powerful and responsive, it simply lacked the soul of an AMG product. An AMG without the thunderous roar of a V8 under the hood felt like the antithesis of an AMG car.
The upcoming V8 is expected to be based on AMG’s existing twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre architecture. This engine will likely deliver enhanced performance metrics, including improved throttle response and a higher redline. The change from a cross-plane crankshaft to a flat-plane design will contribute to these enhancements, although it may alter the signature burble traditionally associated with AMG engines.
Expected Performance From The C63
AMG plans to use artificial sound generators to address concerns about sound quality with the new flat-plane crankshaft to simulate teh deep exhaust notes expected from the original 6.3L naturally aspirated V8 which christened the C63. Enthusiasts probably wouldn’t be happy with this, but nevertheless it does bring back the V8. The current vehicle accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, & the new generation will likely improve upon that time.
Other Changes & Launch
Mercedes-AMG also wants to differentiate the design between its various models, which would reinforce the C63’s position as one of their flagship performance sedans.
As we look forward to its release in 2026, excitement builds for what promises to be a remarkable revival of one of AMG’s most iconic models.
