Maserati has been known for its supercars since the 20th century but has taken a different route ever since. They decided to capture the SUV market with the Maserati Levante in 2016. They have expanded the SUV range with the Grecale and have decided to launch it in India.
The Grecale has been on sale in global markets for 2 years now. Given that it is a Maserati, people expect a powerful powertrain from the Grecale. You get 2 engine options- a 2.0L 4-cylinder mild-hybrid or a 3.0L turbo V6. There are 3 trims to choose from- GT, Modena and Trofeo. The GT and Modena have similar 4-cylinder petrol engines, but the performance is boosted for the Modena. The GT produces 296 bhp and 450 Nm, while the Modena is tuned to produce 325 bhp and 450 Nm. The V6 churns out a healthy 528 bhp and 620 Nm and touches the 100 kmph mark in under 4 seconds. You only get an 8-speed Automatic gearbox across all 3 variants.
People have criticized the looks of the Grecale. Some say it looks similar to the Porsche Macan. The Grecale is still a pretty-looking SUV. The iconic grille and a smooth design language make it stand out amongst other traffic. Levante remains the better-looking SUV, but the Grecale is no eye-sore either.
The cabin is filled with high-quality leather and soft-touch materials. Aluminium accents give it a premium look. One downside of Grecale’s interior is the lack of physical buttons. All operations are done via the digital screens. You control the air conditioning through an 8.8-inch screen, while you get a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen.
The feature list is pretty impressive as well. Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen for rear passengers are just some of the features that the Grecale comes equipped with. However, these features are somewhat expected at this price point.
Pricing for the base trim, GT, starts at 1.31 crore rupees, while the Modena trim costs slightly more than 1.5 crore rupees [ex-showroom]. There is a significant price hike for the Trofeo and could set you back by more than 2 crore rupees. It costs less than the Levante while producing similar power figures as the Levante. Maserati will go the CBU route with the Grecale. This means that the Grecale will be subjected to heavy taxes and will be produced in Italy.
You pay a heavy premium for the Maserati badge. Its competitors like the BMW X4, Porsche Macan and the Mercedes GLE, cost significantly less than the Grecale. Pricing for all these German SUVS starts from under the 1 crore rupee mark. The Grecale is an exciting premium SUV, but the sales are expected to be pretty low considering its pricing.
