Maruti Suzuki’s collaboration with Toyota India has significantly reshaped both brands’ market dynamics over the past few years. Through badge engineering, several Maruti models, like the Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, Grand Vitara and the upcoming e-Vitara, now wear Toyota badges, helping Toyota tap into Maruti’s platform strength. In FY2025, these rebadged models accounted for a massive 53 percent of Toyota’s record sales of 309,230 units, compared to 44 percent in FY2024. This alliance has definitely boosted Toyota’s volumes and market presence significantly.

Do Toyota Versions Affect Maruti Sales?

Evaluating internal competition between models show mixed effects:

  • Glanza vs Baleno: In FY2025, Glanza sold 48,839 units (down 7 percent YoY) compared to Baleno’s 1,67,161 units (down 14% YoY). This suggests competition but not sharp cannibalization.
  • Rumion vs Ertiga: July 2025 sales highlight Ertiga’s continued strength, 16,604 units (up 6 percent MoM), whereas Rumion’s volume (576 units) fell drastically, down 70 percent YoY and 146 percent MoM. The significant drop indicates that demand still favors Maruti over Toyota’s MPV badge, at least for now.
  • Hyryder vs Grand Vitara: With 60,388 units in FY2025, Hyryder holds a strong 19.5 percent share of Toyota’s sales. Grand Vitara sales were high at 1,23,946 units. However, on looking at July 2025 figures, the Hyryder achieved more sales in July 2025 (8814) compared to the Grand Vitara (6373). Overall, the rebadged SUVs seem to coexist well without substantial overlap.

How Maruti Benefits From Toyota’s Hybrid Tech

Maruti has leveraged Toyota’s hybrid technology to diversify its portfolio of powertrains. A notable example is the Invicto, based on Toyota’s Innova Hycross hybrid, which is available through Nexa showrooms. While its sales remained modest, about 4,036 units in FY2025, slightly down from 4,599 units the previous year, Maruti aims for a long-term benefit from this partnership building technical knowledge for future models.

Another example is the strong-hybrid system used in the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. This makes them the only cars to provide a hybrid option in their segment. This clearly shows how Toyota has benefitted from this alliance with India’s largest carmaker, complemented by its good package of additional warranty and discounts.

Concluding Thoughts

The Maruti-Toyota partnership seems to be built on a clear strategic value. Toyota has significantly raised its domestic sales through rebadged Maruti models, hitting a 53 percent share in FY2025. Maruti, on the other hand, benefits from access to Toyota’s hybrid technology and a premium product (Invicto). Though its traditional models continue to outperform Toyota’s equivalents in most cases. Looking ahead, the alliance is likely to strengthen both brands, especially as more models like the e-Vitara are set to be launched.
