Maruti Suzuki has crossed a major production milestone with the WagonR, as cumulative production in India has now exceeded 35 lakh units. This landmark was achieved in December 2025, a little over 26 years after the model first went on sale in the country in December 1999. Over this period, the WagonR has remained in continuous production across three generations, which underlines its steady demand. With this achievement, the WagonR joins a small group of Maruti Suzuki nameplates, including the Alto and Swift, to reach such high domestic production volumes. Today, the car is manufactured at the company’s Gurgaon and Manesar plants in Haryana. Both plants have played a key role in sustaining high output over decades.
Why The WagonR Continues To Find Buyers

The WagonR’s long-running success links closely to its positioning as a practical family hatchback. Its tall-boy design has consistently offered easy entry and good cabin space, traits that appeal strongly to buyers. Over time, Maruti Suzuki has updated the car to reflect changing needs, without altering its core identity. The second generation, launched in 2010, brought mechanical and comfort upgrades, while later updates added factory-fitted CNG option and an AMT gearbox. The third-generation model, introduced in 2019, moved to the fifth-generation HEARTECT platform. It offered improved structural rigidity, interior space, and compliance with evolving safety and emission norms.
Technology, Safety & Powertrain Evolution

The current WagonR reflects how the model has adapted to regulatory and market shifts. It now offers six airbags as standard, along with ABS with EBD and electronic stability control on select variants. Buyers can choose between 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines, as well as a factory-backed CNG option. These updates have helped the WagonR remain competitive despite growing pressure from newer hatchbacks and compact SUVs. Importantly, Maruti Suzuki has managed to introduce these changes while keeping the WagonR within an accessible price band.
Domestic Milestone With Global Relevance

While the 35 lakh figure reflects production in India alone, the WagonR’s reach extends well beyond the domestic market. The model is also produced in countries such as Japan, Hungary, and Indonesia, and is exported from India to over 75 global markets. In August 2025, cumulative global sales of the WagonR crossed 1 crore units, placing it among Suzuki’s most successful nameplates worldwide. The Indian production milestone therefore highlights not just local acceptance, but also India’s role as a key manufacturing hub for a car that has maintained relevance across multiple regions and generations.
