Maruti Suzuki India has achieved a major milestone with the Jimny, as the SUV has now crossed 1 lakh export units since its debut in 2023. This compact off-roader, produced at the company’s Gurugram facility, has seen stronger demand in international markets compared to domestic sales. It is now the second most exported model from Maruti Suzuki, following the Fronx. Powered by a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine and equipped with Suzuki’s ALLGRIP PRO 4WD system, the Jimny features a ladder-frame chassis. The 5-door Jimny is now shipped to over 100 countries, including regions in Australia, South Africa, and Japan. The achievement underscores the carmaker’s increasing focus on exports, which have become a significant part of its growth strategy as global appetite for compact SUVs continues to rise.

Global Demand Outpaces Indian Sales

Interestingly, the Jimny’s export performance has far outpaced its domestic numbers. In India, sales have been modest, with a total of 28,494 sales from June 2023 to September 2025. This results in a monthly average of roughly 1,050 units since launch. As a result, the company is constantly offering discounts to boost the Jimny’s appeal. In contrast, international demand remains robust. In the first half of FY 2025-26, Maruti Suzuki achieved a 40% growth in exports, reaching over 2 lakh vehicles. This marks the company’s highest-ever export volume for this period. The company now holds more than 46% of India’s passenger vehicle export share. In FY 2024-25, Maruti Suzuki’s total exports exceeded 3.3 lakh units. Maruti Suzuki’s global strategy has positioned India as the exclusive production hub for the 5-door version of the Jimny. Markets like Japan, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, and Chile have emerged as top export destinations.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Jimny 5-door abroad offers a strategic advantage for Maruti Suzuki as it continues to balance domestic and export priorities. While the SUV’s niche appeal and premium positioning have limited its traction in India, its strong global response reinforces its value as an export-oriented model. Reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki may soon introduce updates such as ADAS in the Jimny for the Indian market, which they have already launched in Japan. The 1 lakh export milestone marks not just a commercial achievement, but also a validation of India’s growing status as a key manufacturing base for Suzuki’s global portfolio.
