Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has confirmed that Maruti Suzuki will unveil a new flex-fuel passenger vehicle in India on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day. The upcoming model will reportedly be capable of running on E100 fuel, which is pure ethanol without any petrol blend.

While Maruti Suzuki has not officially revealed the model yet, the most likely candidates are the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Maruti Suzuki Fronx, both of which have previously been showcased in flex-fuel form.

Maruti Suzuki’s Upcoming E100 Flex-Fuel Vehicle

Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Gadkari stated that vehicles powered by flex-fuel technology would soon be introduced on a larger scale in India. According to him, Maruti Suzuki will launch a vehicle capable of running entirely on ethanol fuel during a special Environment Day programme in Delhi.

The minister also highlighted the government’s broader push towards alternative fuels to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. India currently imports a significant portion of its petrol, diesel and gas requirements, and ethanol-based fuels are being promoted to lower emissions and reduce crude oil imports.

Wagon R & Fronx Among Likely Candidates

Although the company has not officially confirmed the model name, the Wagon R and Fronx remain the strongest possibilities.

Maruti Suzuki had earlier displayed a flex-fuel version of the Wagon R at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. Meanwhile, Suzuki also showcased an E85-compatible flex-fuel version of the Fronx during the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

Industry reports had already suggested that the flex-fuel Fronx was expected to make its India debut sometime in 2026.

What Changes In A Flex-Fuel Vehicle?

Vehicles designed to run on higher ethanol blends require significant modifications compared to standard petrol-powered models. Ethanol is more corrosive and absorbs moisture more easily than petrol, meaning components such as fuel lines, injectors, seals and engine calibration need upgrades for compatibility.

Industry estimates suggest that adapting a vehicle for E100 compatibility could increase costs by approximately Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 initially, depending on the model and manufacturer.

What Is E100 Fuel?

E100 refers to fuel made entirely from ethanol, with no petrol content. Ethanol offers a higher octane rating than conventional petrol and can potentially reduce emissions. However, engines and fuel systems must be specifically engineered to handle such high ethanol concentrations.

India has already standardised E20 fuel, and BIS specifications for higher ethanol blends including E22, E25, E27 and E30 are also being developed as part of the government’s long-term ethanol roadmap.

Maruti Suzuki’s Flex-Fuel Strategy

Maruti Suzuki executives have previously confirmed that the company already possesses the required technology for flex-fuel vehicles and higher ethanol blends. However, company officials also believe that large-scale adoption will take time due to infrastructure limitations and fuel availability.

According to Maruti Suzuki’s senior executive officer for Corporate Affairs, Rahul Bharti, the technology is ready and the company will support the government’s ethanol initiatives whenever required. He also noted that volumes for flex-fuel vehicles are expected to remain limited initially before gradually increasing over the next decade.

Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming flex-fuel vehicle could mark an important step in India’s transition towards alternative fuels. With support from the government and growing focus on reducing fossil fuel dependency, flex-fuel technology may become increasingly important in the Indian automotive market over the coming years. The official reveal on June 5 is expected to provide more clarity regarding the model, specifications and Maruti Suzuki’s future plans for ethanol-powered vehicles in India.
