June 2025 sees Maruti preparing to launch its first all‑electric SUV, the eVitara. Targeted launch date is for September. Recent rare-earth magnet shortages from China have cut production forecasts by two-thirds, casting doubt on its early momentum.

Market Context
By mid‑2025, several rivals have already gained traction or launched
- Tata Harrier EV launched in June 2025, offering AWD, LFP batteries with up to 627 KM MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle range), and Level 2 ADAS.
- Mahindra BE 6/XEV 9e brought long-range offerings (claimed 550–680 km) earlier this year.
- VinFast VF 7 is set to debut in India imminently.
- Hyundai Creta EV with competitive range and features.
- Toyota Urban Cruiser EV (a rebadge of eVitara) slated later this year.
With the segment heating up, Maruti must execute flawlessly to stay relevant, or even maintain and mirror the volumes it achieves with other cars.
What eVitara Brings To The Table

Platform & Powertrain
- Heartect‑e skateboard chassis, co-developed with Toyota, tailored for EVs.
- Two LFP battery options
- 49 kWh (approx. 400–420 km range) — FWD.
- 61 kWh (approx. 500–550 km range) — FWD/AWD optional.
- Performance specs
- 49 kWh = 142 HP with 190 NM.
- 61 kWh = 172–185 HP AWD version with 300 NM.
- Fast charging
- DC 110 kW (30–80% in 30 Minutes).
Features & Safety
- Dual screens (10.1 inch infotainment + 10.25 inch driver display), panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, ventilated seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
- Safety package: Level 2 ADAS, 7 airbags, ESP, 360° camera, TPMS, disc brakes all around.
- Glass sunroof and ambient lighting.
Warranty & Global Push
- 10-year battery warranty.
- Manufactured in Gujarat, with large-scale exports planned — especially to Europe and Japan

Key Risks Ahead
- Infrastructure Delivery
Charger and service center rollout remains promises until proven in real-world. Rivals already have working ecosystems. - Rare-Earth Magnet Shortage
Chinese export curbs have forced Maruti to revise H1 FY26 production from 26,500 units to just 8,200. Inventory lasts only until July — without alternative sources, supply will be strained. - Launch Delays & Export Priority
eVitara launch now expected September 2025, with initial volumes largely exported to meet global targets. Domestic availability may lag. - Crowded Segment
Already operating in a mature Indian EV market — late launch reduces early mindshare against Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, VinFast, and maybe soon Tesla.
Our Take – Clocks Ticking

The Maruti eVitara has the potential to be a technically sound and affordably priced EV with strong battery warranty and global backing. However, its success hinges on overcoming supply chain disruptions, prioritising domestic availability, and rapidly delivering ecosystem support.
If Maruti can resolve magnet shortages, accelerate production post-September, and ensure EV infrastructure, the eVitara could still become a compelling mass-market EV. But in a fiercely competitive landscape, any faltering could relegate it to “too little, too late.”
