Suzuki Motor Corporation is developing a new direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine for growth markets, including India. The upcoming engine is aimed at delivering stronger performance while improving fuel efficiency. Suzuki has identified the technology as DITC in its latest technology briefing. However, the company has not yet revealed the engine’s displacement, power output, torque figures or the first model that will use it.

Suzuki DITC Turbo-Petrol Engine Under Development

The new direct-injection turbocharged engine forms part of Suzuki’s broader research into future internal-combustion powertrains. India is among the markets specifically identified for the project. Meanwhile, Suzuki continues to develop hybrid and electric powertrains for different markets. The company’s approach considers factors such as energy availability, charging infrastructure and customer requirements when deciding which powertrain technologies to deploy.

Suzuki Expanding Its Powertrain Strategy

For India, Suzuki is continuing to explore multiple fuel and powertrain technologies alongside electrification. These include hybrid systems, CNG and biogas applications. Therefore, improving petrol engine efficiency remains relevant to the company’s future strategy. A new turbocharged direct-injection engine could eventually give Maruti Suzuki another petrol powertrain option as it expands into different vehicle segments.

Suzuki Targets 50 Percent ICE Thermal Efficiency

Suzuki is also researching ways to increase the thermal efficiency of its combustion engines. The company currently cites efficiency of around 40 percent and is targeting as much as 50 percent through further development. Its research builds on technology used in the Z12E engine. Areas under investigation include lean combustion, waste-heat recovery, reduced friction and lower-viscosity engine oil. Suzuki is also studying ways to reduce energy losses through engine cooling, exhaust gases and air intake.

What To Expect From Suzuki’s New Turbo Engine

Suzuki has not confirmed the production specifications or launch timeline for the DITC engine. Therefore, its displacement, output, transmission compatibility and vehicle application remain unknown. The engine is currently part of Suzuki’s development programme rather than a confirmed production launch for a specific Maruti Suzuki model.
