Mahindra has revealed a new all-terrain vehicle based on the Thar Roxx platform for the Indian Army. The purpose-built military vehicle features several structural and functional modifications aimed at improving off-road capability and operational flexibility. According to Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, the ATV has been specifically developed for India’s security forces and will soon undergo military evaluation trials.
Exterior Design & Functional Changes

The ATV retains several design elements from the standard Thar Roxx, including the six-slot grille and LED headlamps. However, Mahindra has added a heavy-duty front bumper with an integrated winch for vehicle recovery in difficult terrain.
Additionally, the windshield receives metal reinforcement for extra rigidity, while the bonnet carries a mounted farm jack for field repairs during remote operations.
Open-Body Military Configuration
Mahindra has removed the standard doors and roof to reduce weight and improve operational access. In place of conventional doors, the ATV uses lightweight metal pipe structures that improve visibility and ease ingress and egress.
Meanwhile, the roof area now features a modular roll cage structure that can support a 360-degree turret system compatible with a 7.62 MM medium machine gun.
Off-Road Hardware & Protection
The Thar Roxx-based ATV rides on 18-inch all-terrain tyres and receives increased ground clearance for rough terrain operation. Mahindra has also added metal rock sliders along the sides to improve protection while navigating rocky surfaces.
Furthermore, the vehicle includes underbody protection for mechanical components, reinforced hoist brackets for airdrop readiness, and additional grab handles for roof access.
Utility & Storage Features

Mahindra has equipped the ATV with multiple military-focused utility solutions. At the rear, the vehicle gets a jerrycan holder for extended operational range and a dual spare-wheel carrier mounted on the tailgate.
The ATV also receives MOLLE storage mounts on the rear fenders, allowing soldiers to organize and secure mission equipment more efficiently.
Engine & Performance
Powering the military-spec ATV is Mahindra’s 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 172 BHP and 400 NM of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox and a four-wheel-drive system.
Suspension duties are handled by a double-wishbone setup at the front and a multi-link rear suspension arrangement.
Interior Details
Mahindra has not yet revealed complete cabin specifications for the ATV. However, available images show army green seat upholstery and a dashboard layout similar to the standard Thar Roxx.
The simplified interior design appears focused on durability, accessibility, and operational practicality rather than luxury or comfort-focused features.
Prices In India
Mahindra has not announced pricing details for the Thar Roxx-based ATV, as the vehicle is currently intended for defense applications and military trials.
The standard Mahindra Thar Roxx is currently priced between Rs. 12.40 lakh and Rs. 22.82 lakh, ex-showroom.
Mahindra’s Military Vehicle Portfolio

This is not the first defense-focused vehicle developed by Mahindra. The company has previously supplied models such as the Armado, Marksman, and Scorpio Classic for military and security applications.
The new ATV further expands Mahindra’s presence in India’s specialized defense mobility segment.
Conclusion
The Mahindra Thar Roxx-based ATV introduces a heavily modified military-focused platform designed for off-road and tactical operations. With reinforced hardware, modular utility features, and four-wheel-drive capability, the ATV aims to support operational requirements in demanding environments. Final deployment will depend on upcoming evaluation trials conducted by the Indian Army.
