Mahindra is preparing another update for the Thar 3-door. Sources suggest that the facelift could launch on September 22, 2026. The current-generation Thar arrived in October 2020. Mahindra then updated it in October 2025.

The upcoming model will mark the second facelift for this generation. Test mules point towards styling changes, new lighting elements and fresh alloy wheels. Mahindra could also add more features. The existing engine and gearbox options should continue.

Thar Roxx-Inspired Exterior Design

Mahindra could bring several Thar Roxx design elements to the 3-door Thar. Test mules have already appeared on Indian roads with some of these changes.

The updates include a new grille and projector LED headlights. The headlights feature C-shaped DRLs. Fresh alloy wheels and redesigned tail-lights will also add visual changes. Overall, the new design should give the Thar a more modern appearance without changing its familiar silhouette.

More Modern Features

The 2025 update brought several useful additions to the Thar. These included a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and a Thar Roxx-inspired steering wheel. Mahindra also added rear AC vents, along with a rear wiper and washer. However, the Thar still misses several features available on similarly priced SUVs. These include a wireless phone charger, sunroof, powered seats, ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera. Mahindra could add some of these features with the new facelift. Wireless charging is one of the expected additions.

Existing Powertrain Options To Continue

The Thar currently gets three engine options. These include a 152 HP 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, a 119 HP 1.5-litre diesel and a 132 HP 2.2-litre diesel.

The 1.5-litre diesel comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and RWD. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol gets RWD as standard, with 4WD available as an option. The 2.2-litre diesel comes with 4WD as standard. Mahindra also offers a 6-speed torque-converter automatic with the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel. The facelift should retain these powertrain options.

Ride Quality Could Improve

Ride quality remains one of the Thar’s biggest compromises on paved roads. Its ladder-frame chassis helps deliver strong off-road ability. However, the setup can feel lumpy over broken surfaces.

The Thar uses double-wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link setup with coil springs at the rear. This combination works well off-road. However, the Thar Roxx delivers a more settled ride on paved roads. Mahindra could use the new facelift to improve the suspension tuning. A smoother ride would make the 3-door Thar easier to use every day.

Launch Date & Prices In India

Mahindra has not officially confirmed the launch date yet. However, sources suggest that the updated Thar could debut on September 22, 2026. The company should reveal more details around the launch. The current Thar costs between Rs 10.32 lakh and Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom). The facelift will likely command a higher price. Mahindra has not announced the new prices yet.

Verdict

The upcoming Thar facelift looks set to focus on design and feature upgrades rather than major mechanical changes. The Thar Roxx-inspired grille, headlights and tail-lights should give the 3-door SUV a fresher appearance. Additional features could also improve its everyday usability.

However, the Thar’s core powertrain package should remain unchanged. The bigger question is whether Mahindra will address its ride quality. The current SUV remains highly capable off-road, but its ride can feel unsettled on paved roads.

With the Thar Roxx already offering better comfort and practicality, the 3-door Thar needs to retain its unique appeal. The facelift could achieve that through a sharper design, more equipment and improved everyday usability. At the same time, retaining its compact dimensions and traditional 4WD character will remain important for buyers who specifically want the original Thar formula.
