Mahindra seems to be preparing a refreshed version of the Thar, and recent spy shots suggest it’s taking inspiration from the recently introduced Thar Roxx. The Thar, which already has a strong following in India for its rugged image and off-road capability, is now expected to receive some visual and feature upgrades.
The Test mule seen on Indian roads was still heavily camouflaged, but a few things stood out. There’s a new grille design, likely influenced by the Thar Roxx edition, which features chunkier slats and a more aggressive look. The bumpers also appear to have been reshaped slightly, possibly to give the SUV a more rugged appearance.

What’s Changing Outside
From what’s visible through the camouflage, the updated Thar will retain its stance and proportions. However, some small tweaks are expected to give it a fresher look. The headlamp and tail-lamp shapes seem to be similar, but the internals might get minor changes for a more modern look, possibly including LED elements like the Roxx. A new alloy wheel design was spotted too, although it’s unclear whether this will be exclusive to the higher variants or spread across the range.
Interior Updates Anticipated

Although the interior has not been clearly seen in recent spy shots, some changes are expected. Based on industry trends and recent updates in similar models, the upcoming version of the Thar may include modifications to the infotainment system, connectivity features, and interior materials.
Possible additions could include a larger touchscreen display, wireless connectivity functions, and minor revisions to the instrument cluster. There may also be updates to the seat upholstery and dashboard materials in some variants. These changes are likely aimed at updating the cabin layout and technology without altering its basic functional design.

Powertrains Likely To Remain Unchanged
As of now, there’s no indication that Mahindra will change the engine lineup. The Thar currently offers two engine options, a 2.0 Litre turbo-petrol that produces 150 BHP & 300 NM of Torque (MT) and 150 BHP & 320 NM of Torque (AT) and a 2.2 Litre diesel that puts out 130 BHP & 300 NM of torque. Both engines are available with a 6-SPEED manual and automatic gearboxes.
A rear-wheel-drive version is also on sale, which is offered in two engine options, the 2.0 litre turbo petrol available only with automatic transmission, which produces 150 BHP and 320 NM(AT) of torque, and the 1.5 litre diesel which produces 117 BHP and 300 NM of torque. Aimed at buyers who want the looks without needing full off-road capabilities.
Engine | 4X4 Variant | 4X2 Variant |
Petrol | 2.0 litre turbo-petrol, 150 BHP, 300 NM (MT) & 320 NM (AT). | 2.0 litre turbo petrol, 150 BHP, 320 NM (AT). |
Diesel | 2.2 litre diesel, 130 BHP, 300 NM. | 1.5 litre diesel, 117 BHP, 300 NM. |
Unless Mahindra makes tweaks for better efficiency or refinement, the powertrain setup should stay the same. The existing options already meet the latest emission norms, so there’s little pressure to update them unless there’s a major strategy shift.

Launch Timeline
No launch timeline has been confirmed, but given the frequency of test sightings, the updated Thar could make its debut by late 2025 or early 2026. For now, Mahindra appears to be continuing the current design philosophy while updating the Thar here and there with minor changes.
