Mahindra registered its highest-ever monthly sales in September 2025, touching 56,233 units in domestic passenger vehicle sales. This surpasses its previous record of 54,504 units which it achieved in October 2024. This marks a 10 percent year-on-year growth compared to the 51,062 units sold in September 2024. Passenger vehicle sales, which include SUVs, marked a significant 42 percent growth over the 39,399 units sold in August 2025. This surge allowed Mahindra to overtake Hyundai, pushing it to the third position behind Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors. The achievement reflects the company’s sustained momentum in the SUV space, where demand continues to remain exceptionally strong.

SUV Lineup Driving Growth

The backbone of Mahindra’s performance has been its SUV portfolio, with models like the Scorpio, XUV700, Bolero, and Thar leading the charge. The XUV 3XO, a compact SUV, has also gained quick traction and added meaningful volumes to the sales tally. Its electric lineup too, especially the XEV 9e and the BE6, seem to have contributed in decent numbers. Together, these models not only brought in large urban demand but also maintained steady traction in rural markets, areas where Mahindra has traditionally had a strong base. This mix of established bestsellers and newer models has enabled the company to scale up volumes. This momentum could really be helpful as the festive season has already started.

Outpacing Hyundai In A Competitive Market

Hyundai, which has long held the second or third spot in India’s passenger vehicle rankings, was overtaken by Mahindra in September. While the Creta remained a strong performer in the midsize SUV segment, Hyundai’s overall volumes fell short at 51,547 units. In contrast, Mahindra’s SUV-heavy portfolio capitalised on the growing preference for larger and feature-rich vehicles. The narrowing gap between Tata and Mahindra also signals intensifying competition, with Hyundai now needing to refresh its strategy to keep pace with the rapidly changing market dynamics.

What The Numbers Mean Going Forward

Mahindra’s record-breaking September reflects broader shifts in the Indian automotive landscape, where SUVs are becoming the dominant choice across segments. The company’s ability to post over 1 lakh units (domestic and commercial) in a single month underscores its strengthened position in the industry. This growth could well be attributed to the latest GST revision, as diesel cars have benefitted the most. Mahindra’s lineup is dominated by diesel cars. In FY25, Mahindra accounted for nearly 55% of the total diesel sales. A staggering 77% of its total sales were via diesel vehicles (4.25 lakh units).

With the festive season underway, demand is expected to remain high, and Mahindra appears well placed to sustain its momentum. However, competition is intensifying as rivals ramp up launches and introduce more affordable models. This means Mahindra will need to balance production, supply chains, and keep updating models to maintain this lead in the coming months.
