Mahindra Considering Range-Extension Hybrid Setups

1 min read

Mahindra is reportedly developing range‑extender hybrid versions of its XEV 9e and BE 6 electric SUVs. These versions will pair a small petrol engine with the existing battery and electric motor system, introducing a new powertrain option midway through their lifecycle.

Range‑Extender Hybrid Setup

Both the XEV 9e and BE 6 use Mahindra’s INGLO platform, designed for flexible powertrain integration. The planned range‑extender setup involves using a 1.2‑litre petrol engine solely as a generator. This engine will recharge the battery when needed, ensuring continuous electric driving even when the battery charge drops. The electric motors will continue to drive the wheels.

Powertrain Expansion

Mahindra has already sold over 10,000 units of the XEV 9e and BE 6 combined within 70 days of their launch. This strong start has likely encouraged the company to expand the model range. The hybrid variants (internally codenamed M330 for the XEV 9e and M130 for the BE 6) are reportedly under evaluation, with a final decision expected within six to eight months Mahindra is also reportedly developing a strong hybrid version of the XUV 3XO, which will offer combined power from the petrol engine and electric motor working together under a series‑parallel mix.

Market Landscape & Positioning

India’s hybrid market is gaining traction, with models like the Maruti Grand Vitara Hybrid and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder leading sales. In April 2025, hybrids recorded over 8,700 units sold. Mahindra’s entry with both hybrid types positions it alongside other manufacturers such as Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Skoda‑Volkswagen, and MG, all preparing hybrid models for domestic launch

If launched, the range‑extender hybrids could begin market rollout around late 2025 to early 2026. They may add between 40,000 to 50,000 units in annual sales volume, according to internal projections. Technical and design integration efforts are underway, which suggests these models could arrive as a mid‑cycle update to both models.
