The Innova has ruled the MPV segment for decades. The first iteration of the Innova was a fan favorite for its extreme reliability. The current generation of the Innova is split into two different models – the Innova Crysta and the Innova Hycross. The Crysta has been in the market longer and is the bigger version of the two.
The Crysta is offered only as a diesel. The thirsty petrol engine has been ditched and the 2.4L diesel is your only option. Nevertheless, the diesel engine was still the most popular among the two engines. What is even more shocking is that there are no automatic variants. You only get the diesel engine with the manual gearbox across the lineup. The 2.4L diesel has enough torque to pull this heavy vehicle across. While the petrol model was known for its poor fuel economy, the diesel engine doesn’t return better figures. A claimed mileage of 13 kmpl is pretty low, even after considering the heavy weight it pulls.
NCAP Rating –
Build quality and reliability are the main selling factors for Toyota and the Innova Crysta doesn’t disappoint in those regards either. A 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating for adult occupants, while a 4-star child occupancy score is pretty good. The 2020 model tested at ASEAN NCAP was the Indonesian and Vietnamese versions of the Innova.
Reasons To Buy –
The main reason for the consistent sales figures is the Toyota Innova badge. The previous impressed the Indian market with its robustness and reliability. The Innova Crysta lives up to that name. It provides one of the most practical cabins amongst its competition.
Reasons Not To Buy –
When it was launched in 2016, the Innova Crysta had a decent equipment list. But since then that list hasn’t changed much, the competitors boast a longer list of features. And the price starts from 20 lakhs, which seems pretty excessive for the amount of features it offers. Engine isn’t the most powerful, yet the fuel efficiency figures are poor.
Our Verdict –
Pricing for the Innova Crysta seems rather steep given it lacks out on many modern luxuries like ADAS and 360. Moreover, the customer has only one powertrain to choose from. The value for money factor seems to be lacking the Innova Crysta. Despite Toyota’s reluctance to bring a facelift to the Innova Crysta, the sales figures look strong. Fortunately, the Innova Crysta makes up for these niggles with its impressive build quality and the Toyota seal of reliability.
If your objective is to seat 7 or 8 passengers comfortably, this might be your best bet. But for a car worth more than 25 lakhs, you would expect it to have basic driver aids like a 360-degree parking camera and cruise control. You pray a steep price for the practicality and safety. The Toyota Innova Crysta needs a facelift soon, but it doesn’t seem likely as plenty of people love the ongoing version of the Crysta.
