The Kia Syros has scored a full 5-star safety rating for both adult and child occupants in the BNCAP tests. This makes the Syros the safest car from Kia’s lineup as of now, except the much more expensive Carnival & EV6, as Kia’s previous attempts at the crash tests yielded miserable results even on their more expensive and larger cars.
According to the report sheet, the Syros scored 30.21/32.00 for adult occupant protection, and 44.42/49.00 points for child occupant protection. The Syros was subjected to tests such as Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test, Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test, and Pole Side Impact Test, and safe to say that this Korean crossover has aced all of these tests with flying colors.
In comparison, the Skoda Kylaq had scored 30.88/32.00 for adult occupant protection and 45.00/49.00 for child occupant protection. The Syros is not far behind the crashworthiness numbers of the Skoda Kylaq, and safe to say, this is an achievement and a step forward in the right direction for Kia. Keep in mind, though, that BNCAP does not disclose the “Bodyshell Integrity”, meaning it does not publish whether the structure of the car can handle further load after the test, which might be required of it in real-life crash scenarios such as rollovers. In contrast, the Skoda Kylaq’s platform has proven itself to have a stable bodyshell.
The Syros is a vehicle that comes loaded with features. Thankfully, Kia has not cut corners in the safety department, unlike their other cars. The Syros comes loaded with safety features, including Level 2 ADAS with 16 autonomous features, 6 airbags as standard, ABS, brake force assist system (BAS), electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, hill-start assist control, TPMS, parking sensors, 360-degree camera, ISOFIX child seat anchors and more. The car has now proven its passive safety as well, reflecting a step in the right direction for the Korean twins Hyundai & Kia.
Kia is one of the newest manufacturers to enter the mass market, yet they have made their presence felt in a very short period with offerings such as the Seltos, Sonet, Carnival, Carens, EV6 and now the Syros. Kia has a manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh & is the sister brand of the South Korean giant Hyundai.
Kia’s previous two crash test attempts brought out miserable results. Their Seltos fared terribly in its tests scoring just 8.03 points for adult safety out of 17. Their second car to be tested was the Carens, and even that yielded similar results. It appears Kia has taken a step in the right direction with the Syros to rectify their previously poor build quality, and we hope they get the rest of their lineup crash tested and certified for safety as well.
