The KIA Syros EV enters one of India’s fastest-growing electric vehicle segments with a familiar formula. While the ICE-powered Syros has struggled to gain strong sales momentum, it has always impressed with its practicality, spacious cabin and feature-rich package. The electric version builds on those strengths while introducing a more refined driving experience, improved suspension and competitive range figures. We drove the Syros EV to find out whether it improves on the already capable ICE model.

Exterior

The overall silhouette remains unchanged, but KIA has added several EV-specific design elements. The front now features a closed grille with aerodynamic inserts, while the redesigned bumper improves airflow. New 16-inch and 17-inch aero-cut alloy wheels further enhance efficiency.

Ground clearance has increased by 7 mm to 197 mm, making the Syros EV slightly more capable over rough roads. It also gets flush-fitting door handles, flush roof rails, EV badging and a 16-litre front storage compartment under the bonnet. The X-Line variant’s Matte Black paint gives the crossover a distinctive appearance.

The rear design largely mirrors the ICE version, although the brake lamps and high-mounted stop lamp now use LED lighting to reduce power consumption. A panoramic sunroof continues to be available on higher variants.

Interior

Inside, the Syros EV retains the practical cabin layout seen in the ICE version while introducing a few EV-specific updates. The X-Line receives an exclusive green-and-black upholstery, while other variants get two additional interior themes.

The dashboard houses a large digital instrument cluster and infotainment display, while the floating centre console creates additional storage space. The Shift-By-Wire gear selector mounted behind the steering wheel also frees up space in the centre console.

Equipment levels remain impressive. Features include an 8-speaker Harman audio system, front and rear ventilated seats, Level 2 ADAS, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof. A built-in dashcam is also available, although the X-Line variant misses out on this feature.

Battery, Range & Performance

The Syros EV is available with two battery pack options.

Battery PackPowerTorquePractical Range
42 kWh135 PS255 NMAround 350 KM
51.4 kWh171 PS255 NMAround 420 KM

The larger 51.4 kWh battery delivers segment-leading power and stronger acceleration, while both versions produce the same 255 NM of torque. Power delivery feels smooth and immediate, making the Syros EV comfortable in city traffic as well as on highways.

Ride & Handling

The biggest improvement over the ICE-powered Syros comes from the suspension setup. KIA has introduced hydraulic suspension bushes that significantly reduce the harsh impacts experienced over broken roads.

Ride quality feels more settled, especially at lower speeds. The battery pack also lowers the centre of gravity, improving stability through corners. Body roll remains well controlled, while the steering offers consistent feedback and inspires confidence during quick direction changes.

The brakes provide reassuring stopping power. However, the MRF tyres offer slightly lower grip under heavy braking compared to some rivals.

Features & Practicality

The Syros EV continues to focus heavily on comfort and practicality. The spacious cabin, flexible storage solutions and generous feature list make it suitable for everyday family use.

Along with premium equipment, KIA also offers a 16-litre front trunk that adds useful storage space. The cabin remains one of the most spacious in its segment, and rear-seat comfort continues to be one of the Syros’ strongest highlights.

Battery Warranty & Ownership

KIA is offering one of the strongest battery warranty packages in the segment. Private buyers receive a lifetime battery warranty of up to 15 years for the first owner, providing additional peace of mind.

The company also offers a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme for buyers who prefer a lower initial purchase price. Under this scheme, customers pay approximately Rs 3.3 per kilometre for battery usage instead of purchasing the battery outright.

Verdict

The KIA Syros EV builds on the strengths of the ICE-powered model while addressing some of its biggest shortcomings. The improved suspension, better weight distribution and smooth electric powertrain make it more refined to drive, while the spacious cabin and long equipment list continue to stand out.

It also offers competitive range figures, practical ownership options and one of the most comprehensive battery warranty packages currently available in India. While its unconventional styling may still divide opinions, the overall package feels well-rounded. As a result, the Syros EV appears better positioned than its ICE sibling to attract buyers in the rapidly growing electric SUV segment.
